I'm always looking for stories of individual perseverance and inspiration and, of course, I love football. A story about a simple country boy achieving the NFL dream seemed a good bet. As I read Merril's story full of cliches and syrupy lines seemingly torn from a trip to hallmark card section of the pharmacy, I couldn't help feeling many/most of the stories were not authentic. Nothing is worse than a hypocrite or a fraud and I feel shortchanged by this book.

First, as a daughter and sister to 2 cancer-beating women, kudos to the author that he was able to "find a way". Unfortunately, the book was just "meh". As another reader said, I probably won't read it again.

I just read "Find A Way" from Merril Hoge and I couldn't put it down. I expected an interesting memoir about the life and career of one of the Steeler's finest and toughest players; instead I became engrossed in a book about life. We'd all love to have the pleasure of being born and raised in a perfect environment but that simply does not happen for many people. "Find A Way" not only acknowledges this but through the use of stories and inspiration advice, offers guidance on how to overcome deep personal and professional challenges with determination, grace and dignity. Having been born and raised in New England, I am partial to the Patriots, but this Steeler has a fan for life. I would recommend "Find A Way" to parents and children alike. There is a lesson to be learned in every chapter. Everyone could benefit from reading this entertaining and thoughtful book.

Find A Way is inspiring in that regardless the circumstances or situation Merrill's philosophy will serve to help you move the issues into a decision. It's about choices, attitude, and finding understanding, a good book that will allow you to share some difficult moments of Merrill's life and understand how he simply found a way to go forward living as he believes. Decisions that affect all of us can be more easily managed from the perspective of Find A Way. Humility, boldness, raw courage, faith, preparation, and always introspection.

I was glued to this book the moment I started reading it. Each story that describes the 'Find a Way' mentality is nothing short of intense and/or entertaining, inspirational, and certainly impactful. I have personally recommended this book to many of my family members and friends, and would recommend this book to anyone looking to read an amazing life story or seeking personal improvement.

This was a great read on a quality athlete who surpassed the odds at many points in life, particularly when his life was on the line. This book describes much joy, and also some tearful sorrows. I was a follower of Merril's career and loved watching him play football. This gave me a new perspective on him and to the depths in of life he experienced.

This is not your typical sports autobiography--it is much better. It is a story of a little boy from Idaho who had an abusive father and a Mom who died when he was only 12. His dad told him he was on his own financially at a young age so he labored from sun up to after sun down working at a farm to provide for his school clothes and football equipment. At one point his hand got caught in a piece of farm equipment and mangeled his hand chopping off three of his fingers. Although his fingers were able to be reattached, it took Merril 2 years to rehab his hand. These are only some of his hardships that he endured the last of which was his bout with cancer. His life mantra that came from his Mom was, "Find a Way".
The book is liberally sprinkled with incredibly funny stories. My favorite was the one in which he agreed to speak for one of his teammates at a gathering of " midgets" who had formed a football league. Merril was planning his speech while on route to this speaking engagement. He began to be really impressed that so many midgets had organized themselves and were playing football. When he arrived at the gathering to his amazement he was speaking to kids and their parents and not midgets. Since Merril had planned his speech for midgets he let his audience know his mistake but gave his planned speech anyway. He had the audience rolling on the floor laughing.
I appreciated Hoge's humility in sharing some of his more embarrassing moments in the NFL. Despite continual criticism that he was too small and to slow, Hoge found a way. This was truly a motivational book that Steeler and non Steeler fans will enjoy. Once you pick this book up you will find yourself laughing outloud while being inspired at the same time.
