About the Author

Jo Parfitt, Jo Parfitt's passion for words has led her to become a writer, journalist, speaker, teacher, trainer, author, publisher and publishing consultant. Since 1985 she has had over 20 books published on subjects ranging from computers to careers and cookery to expat living. Jo is happily married to Ian, and together with their boys, Sam and Josh, they have lived in Dubai, Oman, Norway, England and now the Netherlands.

If you're looking for passion, you've certainly come to the right place. Jo Parfitt's passion overflows on these pages of her newly-updated book and it can't help but rub off on you, so be warned. In the movie Adapation, Meryl Streep's character confessed "I do have one unembarrassed passion. I want to know what it feels like to care about something passionately."

Jo genuinely encourages our internal `Meryl Streep' to rethink what is important to us, what drives us and where we would really love to be. She combines her advice, strategies and personal anecdotes with hands-on exercises to encourage us to both dream big and to commit to an ongoing action plan for improving our lives and filling them with passion.

Since Jill and I started developing ExpatWomen.com in March 2006, hundreds of people have written to us and told us how they needed to reinvent their lives, careers and identities when they moved overseas. I praise Jo's wisdom in referring to these crossroads in our lives as a unique opportunity to find out where our true passions lie, rather than dwelling on the who/what/where we used to be.

From personal experience, I completely agree with Jo that finding your passion can transform your life and I wish all of you the same personal satisfaction and fulfilment. Until then... as Jo says... "Time flies when you're having fun" - so soak up every experience like a sponge and be ready when your passion train leaves the station - because it could be the ride of your life.

Andrea Martins, ExpatWomen.com

More About the Author

My first book was accepted by the first publisher I approached, back in 1984. The book was 'French Tarts' and the publisher was Octopus. I went on to have 13 word processing and desktop publishing handbooks published by Macmillan, McGraw-Hill, Pitman and Paradigm, over the next few years. By then I had become an 'expat wife' and was living in Dubai. In 1993 we were posted to Oman, Word had become the only WP program and so my other work dried up. Inspired by the landscape and produce of Oman I decided to co-author another cookbook and create Summertime Publishing in order to do it myself. 'Dates' sold thousands of copies but in 1996 we were posted to Norway. Here, I realised my decade abroad had taught me much about expat life and portable careers. Summertime published 'Forced to Fly' and 'Career in Your Suitcase'. I had become an expat expert and my career as a journalist specialising in expat issues and speaker at international conferences took off.

In 1997 we returned to England for a while and I published 'Find Your Passion' and 'Grow Your Own Networks'. In 2005 we moved to the Netherlands and I returned to traditional publishing and new editions of 'Find Your Passion' and 'Career in Your Suitcase' were published by Lean Marketing Press and 'Dates' by Zodiac. In addition LMP published my books 'Release the Book Within' and 'Expat Entrepreneur'.

Today, I'm still in Holland and Summertime Publishing is back on full throttle, not only as a publisher but also as a complete mentoring and publishing service. In March I published my poetry memoir, 'A Moving Landscape' and have now begun publishing other people's books too.

This review is from: Find Your Passion (second edition) (Paperback)

A second edition, updated by popular demand. In this clear and no-nonsense workbook, the author zeroes in on signs that passion is lacking in your life, and - specifically - what to do about it. Relating her experience, she discusses the energy-sapping trap of attempting to conform, particularly when your personal identity is entwined with "work". After reading Jo's personal life story, you are bound to relate to the search for fulfilling work, no matter what your current life situation is.

But it's not just a story; it's a toolbox to help you know yourself better. Only then can you identify what it takes for your life to be lived more passionately. The author focuses on twenty crucial, nitty-gritty, probing personal questions. Your honest answers will lead you unfailingly toward your ideal life. For each tip, she includes individualized soul-searching tasks for you to do, which will challenge and enlarge your comfort zone so that concrete changes toward passionate working and living are within reach.

You will discover the buzz that ongoing and evolving creativity brings throughout your life, and why enjoyment should always be high on your list of priorities.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Knowing this is crucial to finding a good fit with work. The book's method of identifying this may surprise you.

If you are a chronic "yes, but..."- kind of person, read the section on "Maintaining a Passion-Based Career When You Need the Money". This alone makes the book a must-read. It will be the turning point in how you think about yourself and your life's potential.

The book provides inspiring case studies from men and women from different backgrounds, professions, and countries who have happily transitioned to more satisfying lives. Contact information and references from each case are included.
