Book Description

January 10, 2008
Divorced at 41 after 17 years of marriage, Kenn Shapiro spent a decade inside the often slippery, frequently funny, but ever mysterious world of post-40 single life. Through dates with more than 100 women, and relationships big and small, he's endured the highs, the lows, and the in-betweens of a man older than 40 searching for love and romance. He's experienced pain and ecstasy, love and loss; he's learned some old rules and invented some new ones; he's picked up all manner of practical know-how, yet still blundered his way into disasters both predictable and unpredictable. Through it all, though, he's journeyed on toward an ending that perhaps reveals the very secret of love itself. And with the dedication of a diarist, he's kept track of it all. The result Finding It Again: The Truth About Love After 40 is Kenn Shapiro's first-person account of a single middle-aged man trying to navigate the landscape of love in a complicated world.

With a narrative both revealing and playful and with a smattering of tips, advice and strategies Finding It Again is the side of the post-40, looking-for-love story that men have been wanting to tell, and that women have been needing to hear.

Editorial Reviews

Review

It had me laughing, then crying - then laughing again! Each page has you wanting more. --Karin B.

Wow. Humor, decency, a very real story arc. Not often anymore I close a book and think, ahhhh. Great book. --Heidi I.

I felt as if it had been written specifically for me. It really is a masterpiece. --William E.

From the Back Cover

For the next month or two, with increasing frequency, I'd find myself logging on to the Matchmaker web site, not in a hunt for romance, but as an incredulous spectator of this revealing phenomenon. Each time, as I'd pull up listing after listing of women declaring how equally comfortable they were in evening gowns as in jeans, or how little the location of a date mattered as long as they enjoyed the company of the man they were with, I'd shake my head, not believing how mercantile and impersonal it all seemed--complex human beings willingly reduced to billboard versions of themselves, all in a hungry quest to sell the notion of their love-worthiness. The pathology of it all was deep and fascinating, as engrossing as any good novel, and as with any gripping page-turner, the more I read the less able I was to pull myself away. This was entertainment of the highest order--it had ethos and pathos, comedy and tragedy, all playing out within a setting undeniably pregnant with the prospect of sex and romance.

Pass me the popcorn!

Then, one lonely Saturday night in early July of that year...

More About the Author

A native New Yorker but longtime Floridian, Kenn Shapiro is a father, a lawyer, a writer, an activist, and a contributor to humanitarian causes. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Florida State University and an honors graduate of FSU's law school, Kenn Shapiro's been a college newspaper editor, a coffee house performer, and even, for one night, a stand-up comedian. His legal career has seen him trying cases in state and federal courts, and handling corporate transactions across the North American continent. Through his professional, civic, and charitable endeavors, he's hobnobbed with politicians, Hollywood celebrities, and foreign dignitaries. He's moderated panels on race relations in America, electoral politics, and extremism. He's chaired leadership and community service conferences in Florida, Georgia, New York, and Washington, D.C. He's even been in the chocolate business.

He's a person of substance, humor and heart. But despite his multifaceted resume, the focus of his passion is the written word--a passion that comes through in the wit and the wisdom of his breezy writing style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!, January 12, 2008
This review is from: Finding It Again: The Truth About Love After 40 (Hardcover)
An incredibly well written book that takes you through the adventures of the middle age dating world. The book will make you laugh and make you cry. It's not just a story for those who find themselves in this arena, but for anyone who has ever been in love before. However, IF you are 40 something and dating, nothing will ring more true than pages of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars If at first you don't succeed , try, try again...and he does!, May 27, 2008
This review is from: Finding It Again: The Truth About Love After 40 (Hardcover)
If you're dating, have dated, have a friend in need of help and advice, and looking for love again after 40, 50, 60... This is the book for you! You're bound to relate, laugh, cry, as it happens to him, all the events, highs and lows, emotionally and physically, that shape his quest... trying to find it again, trying to find love again. Here's one passage that really struck home for me.

"Love doesn't come along very often, and when it does it must be cultivated and nurtured. There's no such thing as a love potion. There's no recipe that assures the flowering of infatuation merely by combining certain predetermined ingredients. Love-and why it happens-is a mystery. When it happens, though, love, itself, becomes a potion. It's rare and intoxicating mixture of desire and affection, compassion and need, empathy and openness. It's addicting. A tiny taste of love never satisfies, it only increases the appetite for more. Love inspires and motivates. It soothes and heals. It generates comfort and strength, it can sow the seeds of life itself. It's very, very powerful."
