Editorial Reviews

Review

"Angela Shelton may be the first woman in history to turn a horrific childhood into a movement so full of hope and inspiration, even people who haven't suffered any form of child abuse want to get involved. In her first book, Angela describes suffering through the type of violence that usually leads to a lifetime of debilitating dysfunction. Angela defied the odds and turned her pain into real power. If you want to understand how the human spirit can thrive in the face of unimaginable childhood trauma -- read this book!" Wendy Murphy - Author, And Justice For Some

"With relentless honesty, humor and vitality, Angela Shelton combines the voices of other Angela Sheltons to expose the depths of sexual and physical abuse toward women that pervades the America family. Angela Shelton opens the door for countless others to stop denying their pain, tell their stories, and join together in the revolutionary act of getting well and loving themselves." Charlotte Sophia Kasl Author of Women, Sex, and Addiction, and Moving Beyond the Twelve Steps

"Though she takes on serious issues, Angela Shelton is joyous, irreverent, funny, and feisty." Ellen Bass Author of The Courage to Heal

Angela Shelton is incredibly honest about a terrible subject and her journey is the catalyst for a great deal of healing for both herself and many others, as women meet and end up discussing what for so long has been a silent and taboo subject. Taking off the shackles of shame around abuse and trauma, through both her book and film has literally saved lives, and helped many survivors realise they can become well, including me. Also this 'Recovered' version shares an astonishing new consequence of writing this book and her journey, a direct result of Angela's honesty and willingness to share everything with the world that made all the challenges worthwhile. Sometimes there aren't any words left for human experience, both the worst and the best times, and yet somehow Angela manages to share those depths with us and leave us feeling better

Breathtaking and poignant! This is the story of a woman who was lost inside finding herself and her mission during the course of one arduous yet uplifting spiritual odyssey that came to be the documentary "Searching For Angela Shelton". I was swept along on the journey by Angela's witty voice and compassion as she met other women across America sharing her name. Learning some of their stories while watching Angela follow her destiny and grow from an insecure victim into a survivor, a shining advocate against abuse, was tremendously inspiring. I wanted to be there too. Her spirit is infectious -- her story, a miracle.

Not every true story has a happy ending. This one does, and chronicles the start of an even more amazing feat: raising awareness for an abuse epidemic that is rapidly increasing; helping other victims to break the silence and heal; rallying an army of advocates to fight against abuse. Angela is doing all this and more. "Finding Angela Shelton" is how her movement began. I highly recommend that everyone read the book at some point in their lives. It will be one you never forget.

Wonderful book. A MUST for women everywhere. We women need to unite and be heard for all the "kept secrets" in families. What we hear about and what is really happening are two different things. Abuse is rampant. Read this book to remind all of the damage done by keeping silent, turning a blind eye, or not wanting to "damage" the abuser's image. Enough is enough.

This is a great book and a great compliment to the movie "Searching for Angela Shelton." The book goes into more detail about what Angela Shelton went through in making the movie, as well as more details about the individual Angela Shelton's she interviewed. A great read.
