Angela is one of the most amazing women I have ever heard of.
If you are looking for a wounded whiny victim, this isn't the book !
Angela is a warrior and an agent of change, abundance and positive existence.
Do not be put off by the fact that the book deals with abuse. Sexual abuse is an epidemic in our culture and it is important that we begin to remove the stigma associated with talking about it. Angela shares her story with truthful simple storytelling that comes straight from the heart. And it has a happy ending !
This book is for you and it is about you. Regardless of who you are.
In a culture that values pain and suffering, Finding Angela Shelton provides an opportunity for transformation and action. Her message is simple and powerful : "Heal yourself and you will heal the world."
Healing yourself begins with reading this book. I guarantee it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Necessary, May 25, 2008
This review is from: Finding Angela Shelton (Paperback)
It seems every time I work up the courage to really listen to someone else's story, or to share my own, it wrenches another crack into the shell of that hard kernel of hurt and self-loathing I carry around inside of me. This book helped place another crack without too much angst or tears, because Angela tells her story with openness and honesty.

Angela sets off to film women around the country sharing the name Angela Shelton. She's searching for women's attitudes and outlooks. Not surprisingly, she finds many have been abused. Through her travels and interviews, Angela finds what she was really looking for all along - a sense of belonging and acceptance. A victim of extreme sexual abuse, Angela suffered from low self-esteem. At one point she realizes, "I have a flash of how my whole life, losing my virginity, my relationships, my work, everything has been affected by the beliefs that were set in place when I was little." Sharing others' stories helped her with her own. The more I talk about my own abuse history, or write about it, the healthier I become.

The book is not perfect; for example I wish that it had been written in a more linear manner, and it seemed to drag in places. But it is easily read, especially given the subject matter, and I give it five stars for bravery and fulfilling a need. Angela represents all of us in our search to heal. She comes across as courageous and gritty, and I am thankful that she took on this subject.

With at least one out of four women facing abuse during a lifetime, chances are good that even those not victimized know someone who has been. This is our story, our lives, and the more we talk about it, and normalize it, and recognize it, the faster we can heal, and help prevent future victims.

This book is a must have for anyone who saw the film "Searching For Angela Shelton." Angela takes the reader behind the scenes on her journey toward healing. She allows us to see what the camera did not show. The book was a quick read and makes a great resource to go along with the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angela Shelton Found ME!, April 4, 2008
This review is from: Finding Angela Shelton (Paperback)
Through the pages of this book Angela Shelton details the process of filming the documentary, 'Searching for Angela Shelton'. She discovers that while she believed she was surveying women in America she was truly searching for herself. After confronting her child molestor father on Father's Day Angela realizes how her own self-abuse has impacted many aspects of her life. Through this journey and the insight and wisdom that she learns from the other Angela Sheltons she takes action to heal herself and teach others how to do the same. I now truly believe that everything does happen for a reason. This book has given me the courage to not only find my own voice but to help others find theirs. My life will forever be changed because of the journey that Angela took and the joy it brought to all areas of my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Uplifting Journey!, May 24, 2010

Breathtaking and poignant! This is the story of a woman who was lost inside finding herself and her mission during the course of one arduous yet uplifting spiritual odyssey that came to be the documentary "Searching For Angela Shelton". I was swept along on the journey by Angela's witty voice and compassion as she met other women across America sharing her name. Learning some of their stories while watching Angela follow her destiny and grow from an insecure victim into a survivor, a shining advocate against abuse, was tremendously inspiring. I wanted to be there too. Her spirit is infectious -- her story, a miracle.

Not every true story has a happy ending. This one does, and chronicles the start of an even more amazing feat: raising awareness for an abuse epidemic that is rapidly increasing; helping other victims to break the silence and heal; rallying an army of advocates to fight against abuse. Angela is doing all this and more. "Finding Angela Shelton" is how her movement began. I highly recommend that everyone read the book at some point in their lives. It will be one you never forget.

I picked up this book because I wanted to learn more about the Angela Shelton that made the documentary. And I was looking for a different kind of book on sexual violence that I could relate to and not be bored with the story. I have ADD and was interested and able to keep reading all the way through this one. It was funny, wise, interesting, and uplifting, just as the reviews on the book said. It made me realize once again how important healing and talking about this issue is. Worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding (Courage with) Angela Shelton, September 3, 2009
This review is from: Finding Angela Shelton (Paperback)
This book is a an unfailingly courageous and compassionate reflection on the documentary film, "Searching for Angela Shelton." It is well written and flawlessly paced--guiding any survivor of childhood sexual or other abuse, and domestic violence into new realms of healing. It is especially powerful for those of us who may have reached the "end of our proverbial rope."

It all boils down to changing our thought patterns and Angela lovingly shows us how to move forward through the toughest of times. I encourage all survivors to read it--most of all those of us who have given up the hope for true healing. It can change the way you see everything; most importantly, the way you see yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!, June 28, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Finding Angela Shelton (Paperback)
I finally requested "Finding Angela Shelton" from my library and I LOVED it! Angela writes about the making of her movie,"Searching for Angela Shelton" but also ties in history, healing, and hope. This book is so real and so readable. There is also some suspense: what will happen when she confronts her father? Will she manage to stop smoking and stop slapping herself? If so, how? Will the alcoholic Angela ever manage to stay sober? The book was so riveting that I couldn't set it down!

Angela Shelton's memoir is different than all the other survivor memoirs because she never forgot her abuse; she testified about it in court when she was eight years old even though she hadn't seen her mother for a long time, so no one can accuse her of having been coached. Both her siblings validate her memories, and she has court records as proof, and yet her father signed a release to be filmed and denied all his crimes on film, but he contradicted himself left and right in the process, which both angered and validated Angela at the same time.

Survivor memoirs always get slammed by the bleeping "False Memory" people, but they can't touch this one.

As soon as I finished reading the inter-library loan copy (borrowed by my library from the Ventura county library 200 miles away) I went to Borders to buy my own copy, but they told me that they couldn't even order it for me because it is out of print already! I ordered a copy from an Amazon Marketplace vender, but I hope there will be a second printing soon! And I hope that my local library will buy a copy so that more people will be able to read it. If you can't buy the book or see the video, then go to her website at www.angelashelton.com. ASAP!
