Book Description

What’s more important: friendship or freedom?

In the eight years since seventeen-year-old Favor Miller’s father died, she’s had to endure her reluctant, self-righteous guardians the Browns. Every day for eight years, they've reminded her that she doesn't fit in, that she’s not one of them. Every day for eight years, she’s eagerly awaited the day when she’ll finally be free to live her life her way.

On the eve of high school graduation, Mr. Brown ambushes Favor with the offer of college funding and a to-die-for summer internship–with the one stipulation that she must discontinue her friendship with his son, Ethan.

Accustomed as she is to sharing everything with her best friend, this is one secret Favor must keep in order to protect Ethan. The distraction of his new girlfriend, her growing friendship with his older brother, and her need to understand her family history, add in further complications.

As Favor debates signing the contract, she must decide if she’s willing to give up her best friend in order to pursue her dreams. Will she have to stay in the place she’s so desperately wanted to escape in order to make the right decision and get what she really needs?

About the Author

As a devoted fan of young adult novels herself, Lana Long is thrilled to be gracing the YA world with her first novel, Finding Favor. Many years of daydreaming and several writing classes and workshops have contributed to the development of Finding Favor as well as to Lana’s inevitable future books. Through her experiences at Lighthouse Writers in Denver, the Big Sur Writing Workshop in California, and the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Colorado Gold Conference, Lana has learned an amazing amount about writing novels. Although writing serves as a relaxing process for Lana, she is also grounded by her family, by her work as a church treasurer, and by volunteering at her kids’ elementary school. She hopes that her books provide readers with the same entertainment she herself finds in YA novels. 4.0 out of 5 stars Great new YA novel! April 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I really liked this book, which is loosely based on Mansfield Park by Jane Austen (whom I love). I found myself interested and invested in several of the characters, even the Brown's snotty daughter, Madison.

For a bit, I found myself wanting to shake Favor and tell her that her she didn't need ANY boy to be a successful, independent young woman. But in the end, she gets there. I adored her relationship with Mr. Rushmore, and her wonderful hobby of horticulture.

I will definitely be passing this book along to my twelve year old daughter soon. There was a little profanity (nothing too objectionable), and awesomely, no sex. I know this may be very 19th century of me, but I'm still not comfortable with YA novels containing sex scenes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching story July 10, 2013
Format:Paperback
The other day, I was browsing through the list of Kindle freebies and came across this book. Based on the synopsis, it sounded interesting, so I downloaded it. I read it and loved it so much I decided to write a review for it. I've never written a review for a book that wasn't given for review, so this says a lot about how much I loved the book.

A word of advice if you're thinking of reading this in a public are: don't! I read this by the hotel poolside, and had to constantly fight back the tears before I became a sobbing mess in public. Right from the start, the story pulled on my heartstrings. The deplorable treatment received by Favor was heartbreaking. It was only towards the end of the story that she was vindicated somewhat.

This story is based on Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. Any reader who has read that book would recognize the similarities between that story and this story. As a big fan of Jane Austen, I was delighted to read the modern retelling of one of her best books.

I am truly surprised that this book is the author's debut novel and a self-published one at that! I would have never guessed that just by reading the story. It is such an attention-grabber and I couldn't put it down until I had completed it. The story is well-written. There's always something happening, and most of the time, it's something devastating for Favor.

I loved every bit of the story. Although the angst and sadness could be a bit too depressing at times, I couldn't help but want to read more and more and more.

4.0 out of 5 stars A YA book reminiscent of a Danielle Steele book May 31, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Favor has had to endure her filthy rich guardians, the Browns, ever since her father died. With her high school graduation drawing near, she finally gets her chance to get out, with her college tuition paid in full and a dream internship to boot. Of course, there's a catch: she must discontinue her relationship with her best friend, Ethan, who happens to also be the son of her guardians.

This is not a trashy romance novel, rather one reminiscent of a Danielle Steele book. Though the drama was heart-stopping and gut-wrenching at times, this tale was full of characters that were so life-like, they were easily imagined. Everyone had so many layers, much like real people.

This Cinderella-like story had me crying by chapter two. It sounds silly to say, but it's true. This book was a tear-jerker. I can't remember the last time I cried like that over a book. I remember thinking that it was so sad I wondered if I could continue but at the same time I knew I could not put this book down. I knew I was really in trouble when I glanced at the clock and it said it was 3:42am when I had to be up by 7. Yikes!

I loved the gardening and the flowers, the tip-toeing dance of the main characters around each other, and quick-witted humor of the characters. I giggled not only at some of their sarcastic remarks, but also at the references to a certain character reading romance novels. I was amused and entertained by the drama of it all.

I am still unsure about the ending. It felt somewhat as though someone let all the air out of a balloon: deflated and empty. I do not wish to spoil the end for anyone. So, I will not elaborate. I will just say that everything felt like it was all wrapped up into a neat, little one-dimensional package.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finding Favor is Fabulous June 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am pretty new to YA novels. I am really glad I came across this book. It is very refreshing watching a young love blossom. I gave this book a 4 star rating only for one reason. There was never a single "WOW" factor in it. The story is absolutely wonderful but I feel it needed more of a foundation from the beginning.

We learn in the beginning that Favor is living with guardians because both of her parents have passed away but there was really no background on Favor other than that. I had several questions in my mind as I read it and it wasn't until the very end that most of those questions were answered. It had the feeling of walking into a movie about 30 minutes after the film started. This really did not take away from the story but it would have helped I think. The fact that there is young romance without raunchy sex is also very nice and uplifting.

The proof readers did a better job than I have seen on many other books of new authors. There were some errors in the beginning but as I passed them and continued reading they all but disappeared. I have instantly become a fan of Lana Long and I do hope she continues down this path she has taken with these novels. I would most definitely give her any of her new work a try.

I enjoyed the story very much; the characters were very real and compelling. But this is also one of the most poorly-proofed books I've run across in a while.
