Relating to Antwon Fisher,
By Ronald Cox (Upper Marlboro, Md United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Finding Fish: A Memoir (Mass Market Paperback)
I can certainly relate to Antwon Fisher's story, for I was placed in three different foster homes and suffered everlasting effects at the hands of a Reverend and his wife along with another foster home who maimed and tortured the children under their care. I also joined the U.S. Navy in 1984 after being in these homes and am currently serving as a Chief Petty Officer. This story brings with it the breadth and magnitude of how a courageous young man fought the odds of a turbulent pass to become a success in life. The book is well worth buying and the movie will be just as exciting to watch.

Finding Fish is extraordinary!,
By Kelsey (Wisconsin USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Finding Fish: A Memoir (Mass Market Paperback)
Finding Fish is an excellent story filled with emotion. The life story of Antwone Fisher is moving, touching, and unforgettable. His story will inspire you to be all you can be, no matter what the circumstances are. It teaches you to love and believe in yourself no matter what, and it teaches you to love others. It would be hard for me to believe that there could be someone out there who was not the slightest bit touched by this book, not the slightest bit moved, or not feeling any compassion for Antwone Fisher. It touches everyone on some level or another, and is interesting until the very end! Finding Fish is a great book, and I recommend it with all my heart!

Not only an inspiration...,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Finding Fish: A Memoir (Mass Market Paperback)
Antwone Fisher was not just a movie it was an inspiration and something that I will carry with me for the rest of life. Seeing this movie more than three times and crying each time made me learn more and more each time. Mr. Fisher had taught me that when life gets hard you have to stay strong and as wise as you can because someday the day will come for you and you'll acutally get something good in return. The movie was great but the book is even greater. I'm not quite done yet but I'm almost there (I'm on four) and I have learned more things in the 3 days that I've been reading than in the 10 days I do at school. Even though Im only 15 knowing, learning, and reading about Mr. Antwone Fisher has made a real huge impact in my life because I understand that being black is a struggle, but some of the things that he went through a young child never should. And I just want to say thank you to Antwone for making it through his struggle and I want him to know that he has really made a lot of people including myself look at life differently. Thank You very much and I'm sorry that you had to go through some of the things that you did but god knew exactly what he was doing and by you telling your story you have changed peoples way of living and even thinking.... May god continue to bless you more and more each day and may you continue to pray... I hope that you realize that you are a life saver and a very strong blackman and I hope that you always keep your head up and never ever let it hang low.

AN INSPIRING CHRONICLE OF SELF-DISCOVERY,
By
This review is from: Finding Fish: A Memoir (Mass Market Paperback)
Before reading the novel, many people saw the movie that was inspired by the life story of Antwone Fisher. Both are fascinating character studies that chronicle the hard life of a disadvantaged young man who lived to tell the tale.
I am always amazed by the number of children who become "throwaways" after being tossed into a flawed foster care system. Antwone's story, however, shows that childhood adversities CAN be overcome through hard work, diligence, and a desire to succeed. Achieving an appreciation for his own dignity and worth, however, was the goal that dominated Antwone's search for self-discovery and, ultimately, allowed him to thrive, while his less confident peers were swallowed whole by an uncaring system. More than our sympathy, Antwone deserves our congratulations for conquering such a formidable adversary.

Touching Story That Will Stay with You Long After It Is Read,
By Venessia Young "Mississippi Chocolate Chick" (Ridgeland, MS United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Finding Fish: A Memoir (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a 19 year old college student and I picked up this book after hearing so many people talking about it and now I know why. You are taken back to the life of Antwone Quenton Fisher, foster-home child with a foster mother from hell. As he told the story of his life, I was horrified that grownups could be so cruel to a child that was helpless with no way of protecting himself. His foster mother, Mrs. Pickett, was deranged, used derogatory names for him, physically and mentally aboused him, and told him negative things about his family. This book made me cry as I realized that there was no Superman in Antwone's life to save the day. He had to fend for himself and be his own Superman. This book is a MUST REAAD for everyone. He poured his heart out and I was glad the book ended the way it did. I will not give anymore away becuase you should go out and BUY this book!...

From a Fosterling to Success in Hollywood,
This review is from: Finding Fish: A Memoir (Mass Market Paperback)
This autobiography by Antwone Fisher is the true story that inspired the motion picture "Antwone Fisher," directed by Denzel Washington. It is the chronicle of one small boy metamorphosing into the productivity and significant accomplishments of his manhood. "Finding Fish" is the in-depth recall of an adult, with appropriate caveats, that has the draconian ins and outs of a good novel of any genre. A recall and 'telling' that propels the reader through the experienced agony and mistreatment initiated by a single mother unable to keep her child. Yielded into the welfare system by his mother, Antwone suffered twelve years of psychological abandonment and physical abuse by welfare assigned foster parents We are privileged to experience the angst bloom of teenage and puberty, then the transition to productive adulthood. This book is reading of the best kind. It snags and drags the reader from child to the finished product of a wonderful, productive and useful man and father.

'Finding Fish' Finding Me,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Finding Fish: A Memoir (Mass Market Paperback)
Finding Fish was the best book that I have read in a long time. It is now my favorite book and my favorite movie. Antwone Fisher's writing was very deep and I could really picture the events through Antwone's eyes. I laughed, cried, and everything in between reading this book. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who could appreciate its greatness!

Courtney Williams Finding Fish Antwone Fisher,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Finding Fish: A Memoir (Mass Market Paperback)
Finding Fhisher was an inspirational memoir that read like a nonfiction novel. This story made laugh, cry, and jump for joy. At times made me forget that this is what one man had to live with and that everthing he dealt with was astonishingly true. This wonderfully intense novel made me evaluate what I thought was a bad life and appreciate what I had much more. I was dissapointed when I read that last page because I didn't want to stop.
Through all of the abuse he endured through Mrs. Picket, all the emotional damage, he kept on going, almost quitting but never forgettting that he was destined for greatness. His will and determination is what got him through 15 years of abuse. Also some guardian angles(as I'd like to call them) coming at the right time and giving him that love amd affection he needed. When he finally did get away he prospered in the navy. He excelled at everything he did. From being a barbor, his crew winning all events, managing and donating 15,000 in the navy's name and ect. He did get off of track for a while, fighting way more than any other sailor would have been allowed to without being sent home. But even his commanding officers saw that he was special just in need of a little guidance. Overall this was an excellent novel. Way better than the movie which changed and left out many important details. Which were vital to understand and comprehend this man's struggle. I would recommend it to any who has a heart and commpassion in their soul.

Excellent,

Though a fan of Denzel I had little interest in seeing the film. Then one day in a bookstore in Manhattan I saw the book. Glancing over the back summary I had the idea that it should be an interesting read. I've still yet to see the film of this great novel, but I can tell you that the book itself is excellent. Fisher is a great writer and has the ability to bring the reader inside of his world, reminding me of James Baldwin's classic "Go Tell it on the Mountain". It's an excellent story which I was able to relate to on various levels. All of the characters come across vividly with Fisher's lucid writing speech. |
