Book Description

October 17, 2008
Do small groups really work? If you've led or even been part of a small group, the experience can be frustrating. How do you juggle priorities and personalities? How can you tell what individuals want or need from the group? And how do you even get people to clear an hour in their schedule to show up? What's meant to bring life can become dry, stale and ineffective. Tara Miller and Jenn Peppers, experienced small-group facilitators and trainers, have observed and had the same questions and frustrations. But they've also experienced the power small groups have to help people heal, to allow individuals to wrestle with questions, to create a space where people know and are known by others, and to open people up to encounter God more deeply. So in these pages, Miller and Peppers passionately offer help and hope for your small group, so that you can encounter God in new and deeper ways together. Their honest, nonprogrammatic guide
  • provides exercises and reflection questions throughout and at the end of each chapter to help you process the material and then actually work it into your group
  • includes many real-life stories from the authors' wide-ranging experience with small groups
  • points out common obstacles that keep leaders from being able to follow the Spirit effectively--and ways you can avoid or overcome them
  • equips you with skills that will draw people toward Christ in authentic ways
As you read and reflect on the authors' practical and life-giving ideas, you'll learn to listen to God and others, guide groups through conflict, know yourself better, and create space for the Spirit to work during your group time. Developing these skills will prepare you to lead any small group, no matter what kind or setting. Finding the Flow overflows with fresh water so that you can be refreshed, encouraged and equipped to help others in small groups drink deeply of the riches of life in Christ as you encounter him together.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An interactive, conversational and engaging guide to empower and equip group leaders, helping them create life-changing environments that produce passionate followers of Christ." (Bill Donahue, pastor of leadership development, Willow Creek Community Church and author of Leading Life-Changing Small Groups )

"This is one of the most practical books available regarding how to develop transformational leaders who can in turn lead transformational groups. What sets their work apart from all the other small group books out there is their focus on the leader of the group. I've seen Jenn and Tara at work firsthand in the church where I pastor, and they've taken the small group ministry to a new level of effectiveness." (Ron Johnson, founding and lead pastor, Pathways Church, Denver, Colorado )

"Community doesn't come with a manual. But if it's experience and wisdom you're looking for, Miller and Peppers have a ton of it. Using real-life examples, solid relationship principles and hands-on exercises, Finding the Flow explores the dynamics of gatherings that thrive versus survive, and the facilitation practices that can help make the difference." (Sally Morgenthaler, contributor to An Emergent Manifesto of Hope )

"Finding the Flow is a helpful book written by two practitioners who have lived and breathed small groups in their local church. This book will help every current or prospective leader of small groups be more effective. This is must-reading for small group leaders!" (Jim Tomberlin, founder, Third Quarter Consulting, former regional pastor, Willow Creek Community Church )

"Practical yet profound. Finding the Flow is a necessary companion for anyone involved in small group leadership and development." (Robert E. Logan, president, CoachNet International )

"Here is the total package! If you lead a small group or oversee a small groups ministry of any kind, you need this book, especially if you're bored with the old 'tried and true' methods. Here is a guide for growing groups in this postmodern era. The authors--who write engagingly and with uncommon transparency, wisdom and grace--provide readers all they need to make small groups successful. They show how groups can be God's mechanism for profound spiritual transformation. The section on helping group leaders understand themselves before they facilitate groups is worth the price of the book. . . After reading a few pages, you will wish that you were in a group that Jenn and Tara were coleading." (William W. Klein, professor of New Testament, Denver Seminary )

This book is an amazing resource for leaders and groups. In it you'll find the foundational elements of group life taught to you in fresh ways and with new language. You'll also find insight on what's new in group life and how groups are changing and morphing for a new generation.

My favorite part is that at the end of each chapter there are exercises and questions that really help you dig into how you do and lead groups. Actually...there are provoking questions scattered all through the book. So if you like thought challenging questions, great writing and good tools for you and your leaders. Go get this book right now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for the Blind, March 24, 2010

Once again, great book, just wish all disciples would strike any use of the word "magic" from their arsenal of words. The section on preparing one for spiritual warfare and what happens when one's inside pours outside was very wise indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding the Flow, July 15, 2009

This review is from: Finding the Flow: A Guide for Leading Small Groups and Gatherings (Paperback)
For over 15 years I worked in the area of small groups and during that time I read much of what was written on the subject from both a Christian and a secular perspective. Recently, when I picked up "Finding the Flow", I was less than excited about another Christian book on the subject of small groups.

I was in for a pleasant surprise. From the moment I began reading I was hooked. The openness and honesty of these two authors is fantastic. No politically correct "Christianeeze", no follow the bouncing ball and you will have a perfect Small Group Ministry, no avoiding the hard questions. And that doesn't mean it lacks depth. The life and ministry experience that Miller and Peppers bring to this book will give those involved in small group ministry real practical guidance.

Buy the book, read and enjoy. And if you're a pastor or small group ministry leader, then buy enough books to use it as a training resource for all of your small group facilitators. They will thank you for it.
