For forty years Yvonne Perry was enmeshed with the fundamental dogma of religion and lived according to the interpretation of the Bible that her family, society, and church leaders passed down to her. Before she had a label to put on her empathetic ability, she called herself an intercessor carrying the burdens of others to the throne of grace. While praying for others she empathically took on their suffering until it severely challenged her emotional and physical health. A graduate of American Institute of Holistic Theology, Yvonne holds a Bachelor of Science in Metaphysics.

I've long felt the mixed blessings of being empath and like many empaths, have lived a life being misunderstood and subjected to criticism for being "too emotional" or "too highly-strung". I felt like an emotional sponge fit to explode while working in the corporate world, soaking up the atmosphere despite my best endeavours at protecting myself.

When I heard that a lady who I much admire (Yvonne Perry) had written a new book on empaths, it was on my list of must-reads immediately! It was a huge relief to read through Yvonne's wonderful book "Whose Stuff Is This?", nodding vigorously and shedding a few tears as she bravely shared her story. My heart expanded as I read through the many stories Yvonne sprinkles liberally throughout Whose Stuff Is This? and it was just SO nice to realise that being an empath is a true gift and there ARE ways to use this amazing natural ability for good effect without being a risk to our own emotional and mental wellbeing.

I loved reading the chapter on the Psychology of an Empath, with the Core Temperaments being truly insightful. I spent quite some time reflecting on my own personal journey in terms of nurturing peace and balance whilst reading this chapter (7).

Chapters 8 to 10 should be required reading for any practitioner, therapist, coach, spiritual healer and counsellor - especially at the time of training! Identifying Your Own Energy, Clearing Your Energy Field and Setting B0undaries really dinged a few bells that could so easily have been dealt with all those years ago while I studied as a holistic massage therapist and spiritual healer! It is only now that I can truly understand and explore the gifts that forgiveness and detachment offer empaths and I am so grateful to Yvonne for sharing so much wisdom in such an easy-to-read format.

This is a book I will return to time and time again - and will wholeheartedly encourage people to read, too. At this time in our evolution, empaths need to be firing on all cylinders, free to use their gifts yet able to protect their energies and their sanity.

For now, I'm going to meditate on this wonderful affirmation from Yvonne's affirmation gems in the book: "I am abundantly blessed and happy as I express the beauty and creativity of my heart."

My whole life I have been affected by other peoples energy and had many mood swings not knowing what was going on with me and feeling no one understood me and that I did not "fit in" on earth and i was labeled "over emotional or to sensitive". Now I realize I have been given a gift not a curse. I can accept myself so much more than ever before and protect myself from unwanted emotions that do not belong to me. Thank you so much I will be forever grateful and I read this book often

Commander Deanna Troi, Empath and Counselor on Star Trek: The Next Generation would love this book as do I. Whose Stuff Is This?: Finding Freedom from the Negative Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You by Yvonne Perry is a book for our time. Yes, there are people very much like Deanna Troi and Yvonne Perry is one of them.

This book not only shares her fascinating story as an empath but also talks about what it means to be an empath, giving both a scientific and psychological point of view. The "stuff" it refers to includes the emotions, the energy, the thoughts - the "stuff" of other people - that empaths take on often unknowingly that feels like it is their own. She shares events from her own life and details how she felt and how it sometimes terrorized and traumatized her. She relates how she came to grips with it, learned to protect herself from these energies, thoughts and emotions and also learned to use it to help others.

The book is full of stories of empaths, how they survived the traumas and even triumphed and how they turned the negative aspects of being an empath to a positive tool for good.

Perry ends the book with advice on how to determine what "stuff" is yours and what belongs to someone else. She gives tips on how to keep your energy field clear that would be helpful to anyone on a spiritual path whether or not they are empathic.

Written in an style that is entertaining and easy to read this book brings information that anyone who is sensitive needs to hear and she avoids the "woo woo" and makes it real. Her expertise as a writer and editor shows up on every page and keeps you reading far longer than you had planned. It is complete with an extensive bibliography, and great information to lead you to a deeper understanding of what it means to be an empath. It even includes a site that has a test you can take to determine if you are an empath.

If you have mood swings that you can't explain, become depressed when you have nothing to be depressed about, if you know what others are feeling and thinking you may be an empath. For you, this book is a must read. Perry states, "As empaths, our journey may be to embrace, feel, and connect, but also to thrive, celebrate, and deepen awareness, not only for ourselves, but also for others with whom we are connected."
