2.0 out of 5 stars Book Condition
Book was in bad shape, cover was wrinkled and torn. Pages were yellow.Did'nt pay much but I am sure it would have been in better shape and at a lesser price at a yard sale.

Well, I'm not sure that I have the ability to express my sentiments and thoughts any better than the other reviewers here, but with the hope of perhaps affecting one reader, I'll share a slightly different experience...

I read this book at a time when my life was falling apart. My marriage was in shambles, my business was bordering bankruptcy, my faith was wavering, and I didn't know what else to do or where else to turn. I didn't know whether or not to pray scriptures, get on my knees 3 times/day, get counseling, rebuke Satan, start fasting, give more money to church, or drop down and just want to die.

The point is that many of these things are well and good in and of themselves, but they have very little to do with understanding and trusting God. He's not a magic Geenie, He's not here for our personal material comforts, and much of today's teachings about God seem to lead us toward Him with the expectation that He'll solve our problems and make things better here on earth.

Dr. Larry Crabb truly puts life's difficulties into perspective and certainly helped me to turn to the Lord and turn away from trying to use "tricks" to get Him to do what I want. That alone is worth all of the pain and suffering I've been through.

Hope this helps. God Bless.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those struggling with WHYs this is a MUST READ!, November 2, 1999
This review is from: Finding God (Paperback)
This book has tremendous impact, because it corrects our view of God, ourself and our problems. It describes how we relate to Him and others based on these views. Excellent examples are used.

FINDING GOD is not just something you sit back and read. It requires decision-making. At times this book can be really infuriating and the level of trust required by God can seem completely unreasonable. Yet the author is always encouraging, convincing us of how badly we want to trust God in that no-holds-barred way.

This book changed my life, but not in the way I expected it to, Praise God! I initially purchased the book looking for relief from anxiety and depression. I wanted to feel better. What I got was a way closer to God and a level of trust in Him I didn't even know I was missing. My response to my problems has slowly changed as my trust has grown. This may have alleviated some anxiety. That's not really my focus anymore, so it's hard to measure. But I am happy. And the WHYs are pretty much gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Unexpected Answer to "Why", April 16, 2001

This review is from: Finding God (Paperback)
I read this challenging book during a time of personal hurt and questioning. It helped me see that the answers to questions concerning why things happen as they do are not as important as the Christ who came as The Answer. I learned that our feeble attempts to manipulate and control God by our prayers and whining will not work -- we must accept the fallen-ness of our world and through faith in God's ultimate goodness we find Him. Very thought provoking and inciteful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solving problems isn't the point, February 3, 1999
This review is from: Finding God (Paperback)
The whole message of this book is that we shouldn't be concerned with our problems, instead we should focus more on our relationship with God In doing this, we can get to know him better by helping us through our problems.

A book that has definately helped me not question "Why God?", but accept that he is doing what is best for me in my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of those books that drives it home, June 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Finding God (Paperback)
Finding God speaks honestly and openly about the pain and hardship in our circumstances. Larry Crabb writes about the hurt in the loss of his brother in a plane crash and how this pain has impacted his walk with Christ. He lends his own insights as to the why and the answers God won't provide as well as what He does provide.

This is as essential as Covey's 7 Habits book. God used this book in my life so much that if you don't like it I will buy your copy and get it away to someone else. One of the most imprtant books I have ever read. - DaveDavidson.com

I've had this on my bookshelf for years and never reached for it until my life was in shambles. Having grown up thinking I had strong faith in God and could accept His will for me, this book spoke to my heart and allowed me to see that I had only been managing my circumstances. After years of self-absorption and self-pity, I am now climbing out of that to understand the futility of trying to make the world "like the Garden" and accepting the goodness of God in spite of it. How freeing it has been to be able to rest in knowing that no matter what, God is good and loves me and my happiness does not depend on what is going on in my life around me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why does God allow suffering??, June 16, 2008

I have been on a long search for answers to 'why do these bad things happen??'
In this book he writes; "If we believe God is powerfull, we are not convinced that he is kind because, if he CAN relieve our suffering, why doesn't he? The silence of God during tough times strengthens this foundational doubt that God is good."

I have read book after book during the past year none of which offered any peace. This book has opened my eyes to some truths and I feel the beginning of real peace.

This is one of the best books I have ever read! I have read almost every one of Larry Crabb's books and haven't been disappointed in any of them. This one is excellent. I highlighted so many of the pages and will read it again and again. I 'found' God in ways I had not done so before. I Highly recommend this book!
