Book Description

April 16, 2008
The year was 1950...a terrified Navajo girl, only thirteen years old, travels to a small Hopi hospital to give birth to premature twins. With no formal education and unable to speak English, Helen unknowingly signs a paper by marking her "X" and thumbprint. She believes the hospital is asking for permission to leave her twin girls in their care until they are healthy enough to go home. When the young mother returns expecting to be reunited with her daughters, she finds that something has gone desperately wrong. Follow the miracle trail as destiny draws mother and daughter together again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story of one woman's journey back to her heritage, June 21, 2008
This review is from: Finding Helen - A Navajo Miracle (Paperback)
Great summer read!

Wow! What a moving story of a Navajo woman's 33 year journey back to her roots after being mistakenly adopted out in the 1950s. Written from the perspective of several key people in the story. The frightened 13 year old girl who travels to a small Hopi hospital to give birth to premature infant twins, the older Mormon couple who long for more children and then of course, the perspective of one of the twins (the author)growing up Navajo in an Anglo world.

This is a beautiful story that will be sure to tug at the heartstrings of every mother and anyone who loves an inspirational read about everyday miracles!

Finding Helen is a beautiful book---had me feeling elated and then in tears--The true story of a Navajo woman and her sister twin had been taken away at birth by the Doctor by tricking the young mother into signing a paper she couldn't read with her signature just an X. Her young husband away at work out of the area came back home and found out---and then, told the mother, "the strongest one will come home. Years and years later the daughter began searching and finally found her mother, and did "come home.

I have always had a love for the Indian people and when I heard about this story I wanted to read it. I loved it. Finished in two sittings. I hope she writes more about her heritage.
