5.0 out of 5 stars Oliver Twist has nothing on this guy
Jim Daly's book is not just inspirational. It's important because it is real. It is as real as the chipped linoleum floor of a crummy kitchen in a lousy apartment building. And that's about as good as his future looks. How he overcomes betrayals, heart aches, deaths, and a slew of disappointments is amazing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading
Although Mr. Daly had an undeniably tragic and difficult childhood, I felt that the inner jacket cover's blurb that he "relives the horrors no child should endure" is misleading and a gross insult to those who have survived the true horrors of sexual and physical abuse as children.

It is THE amazing grace in the end that sends this story into a realm that couldn't just happen without some divine help.

Focus on the Family is lucky to have this guy. He's the real deal. He's the genuine article, not fake, not flattering, not unfamiliar with real struggle. He knows how important a family is because he didn't have it.

This would be a great movie; uplifting and meaningful...something movies have not been in a long time....and it's so gritty even Focus on the Family could not handle it.

This book took courage and bravery to write. Read it because it will impart these traits to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much more...., September 13, 2007

This book is so much more than an autobiography of a man with a troubled childhood who becomes successful. It is instructions on how to uncover and understand God's presence in your life from your first memory of suffering as a child to your present crisis. Never has a book, so easy to read, helped me to discover and see God's grace and redemption play out in my life as a person, husband and father.

5.0 out of 5 stars Balancing Faith, Family and the Future, April 24, 2008

This review is from: Finding Home: An Imperfect Path to Faith and Family (Hardcover)
Jim Daly and Bob DeMoss have combined their gifts to produce an excellent book for married couples and parents. Well-written and positive, the book constantly points us to enduring values --- and thus away from the stress and strain that so often sidetrack us.

How do you see past the daily grind? The answer is a change of focus: Daly shows us what we ought to be thinking about, looking at, and considering as we raise children, manage a career, and forge a family.

A great wedding gift --- helps new couples think about these issues on a pre-need basis. An excellent anniversary present --- shows couples how to unite around common goals and common ground.

Well-written, encouraging and always realistic. A hope-filled book that lights your pathway to the family God wants you to be!

This story is a modern day miracle. To read of this boy's journey and see the man that came out the other end of it is truly amazing. Only one kind of love can do that! And I'm happy to see that credit was given where credit is due.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that needs a little help finding their way "home".

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding Home: Hope In Desperation, May 29, 2009

This review is from: Finding Home: An Imperfect Path to Faith and Family (Hardcover)
Jim Daly's book Finding Home was compelling. Although he never suffered physical or sexual abuse the other things he and his family endured were still things that no one should never have to endure. The fact that he grew up as a hopeful boy is remarkable to me. Every day people give up over less than Jim endured on one of his bad days.

The part of the book that really resounded in me was his account of his mother's death. I suppose the reason was that my own sister died and left five children, the youngest being six and eight years old. I saw my nephews in that chapter as they suffered over their loss. No one could take the place of their mother. The difference was that Jim and his siblings had no one to hold them and tell them that all would be well.

His narrative rang true in that he wrote the way a boy thinks. Boys can squeeze out joy in the middle of hard times as long as they have access to a bicycle or a ball and bat. This book emphasises the importance of people stepping in to make a difference in the lives of people that cross our path. Coaches, teachers, pastors, and friends are necessary for kids. We must be there to lend a listening ear and wise council. This book is a "must read".

5.0 out of 5 stars A Message of Hope, February 22, 2008
This review is from: Finding Home: An Imperfect Path to Faith and Family (Hardcover)
This was an excellent book. The author shares so much of his own personal life - much of which was heartbreaking. But he also shares how he was able to rise above his past to become the man God wanted him to be. This book will give you hope that you, too, can rise above your own past and have a fulfilling, life of purpose.
It was definitely worth reading. I'm putting a copy in my church library to share it with others.

Jim Daly's early years read like the start of a sort of horror story that gets worse and worse a time goes on. If you have struggled with anything and become discouraged, get this book and see what faith can do for you (as it did for Jim Daly).

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting life, June 1, 2011
This review is from: Finding Home: An Imperfect Path to Faith and Family (Hardcover)
The newly (2007) released autobiography of the life of the current president of Focus on the Family (I read this in 2007). Jim grew up in an extremely dysfunctional home (both parents alcoholics), in bad neighborhoods (someone killed 15 feet outside his bedroom), and was a victim of his parents divorce, his mother's death at a young age and his father's later suicide. It spite of all this, with God's grace, he survived to rise to the head of an organization that helps families keep their family units together functionally. A truly amazing story and easy to read. 226 pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jim Daly is authentic in his writing, March 21, 2011
I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Daly at a conference last year, and I was impressed by his humility and the peace that was within him in spite of what he endured by an abusive (emotionally and mentally at the very least) father. His biography was a wonderful help for me as I have tried to understand the dysfunctional family dynamics my siblings and I had to endure, mostly because of a father who, while present all the time, ignored us, treated us without either mercy or justice, and who our mother was continually threatening with divorce because of the poor relationships he had with us all.

With the help of Jim Daly's book, I have been able to better understand the social dynamics that have come down through several generations in our family. To my father's credit, he probably did not know the full impact of how his father raised him was having on his immediate family. Our father raised us as I believe his father raised him (and his siblings -- many of whom also had problem families), but did not have the tools to stop that trend and fix things. Jim's book may be just the resource you need to stop this kind of behavior in your family. About half the families in the United States have problem relationships between the father and his children.

While Mr. T. Ball criticizes Jim Daly in a negative review for the use of the words, "horrors no child should endure," I wonder if Mr. Ball remembered the "neighborhood murder" that Jim witnessed! No child should ever have to witness anything like that! As bad as my life was as a young boy, Jim Daly suffered significantly more emotional, spiritual and maybe even physical abuse that I ever did. On a scale of 1 to 10, I found Jim's book was at least an 8.5 (maybe even higher) in its helpfulness.

I hope this book will help you, if you have concerns about your relationship with your father (especially if you are a man), but I realize that it may not be for every one. I encourage you to read his book. At the very least, it won't hurt.

God's peace to you in the reading.
