"Finding Joe" will motivate you to be the best [your name here] the world has ever known. It may even change your life.

Upligting, positive, enlightening. --Hollywood Report Card

Product Description

Winner 2012 COVR Award, Best Video of the Year. In the early 20th century while studying world mythology, Joseph Campbell discovered a pattern hidden in every story ever told. He called it "the hero's journey." Finding Joe explores how the hero's journey is relevant and essential in today's world. It provides a narrative for how to live a fully realized life or, as Campbell would simply state, how to "follow your bliss." The film takes us on an inspirational quest of self-discovery. As you slay dragons and uncover treasures, you just may find that the holy grail you seek is closer than you think.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Campbell July 3, 2012
I was lucky enough to see a screening of the film while the director Patrick Takaya Solomon and Robert Walter were present. They had a Q and A after the film for the group and one of the questions that came up was why they did not include footage of Joseph Campbell talking in the film. Solomon wanted to make a different kind of film and he did note that the film kept to the essence of what Campbell was teaching. Walter, who worked directly with Campbell and was the president of the Joseph Campbell Foundation stated that the film did in fact hold true to the essence of Campbell's teachings. Following Campbell's death in 1987, Walter served as literary executor of Campbell's estate, completing Volumes I and II of the Atlas and supervising its posthumous publication.

This is one of those rare films, for me anyway, that is useful for internal processing, not for receiving facts and data about Joseph Campbell's scholarship. Campbell had a lot to say and if you are looking for a more intellectual or academic approach to Campbell, there are many videos on this already. This is about speaking and acting from the heart. For those who do not understand how to interpret the stories or symbols in the film, I would invite those people to look more into symbolic thinkers like Campbell, Jung, Hillman, etc, and read their work. This film merely provides an introduction into this work and like a good documentary should, it opens up more questions than it answers. This sense of wonder is the point and the children in the film capture that sense of wonder and awe. If you feel confused, scared, or even skeptical, then the film has done its job. In addition, if you feel inspired, full of wonder, and energy afterward, you also have grasped the essence of the film

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone is his/her own hero April 18, 2012
I am a big fan of Joseph Campbell. This movie beautifully conveys Joseph Campbell's core ideas in a way that is both entertaining and informative. If you are in the midst of a life change, this movie will reassure you that your story is not over and that you have chosen the hero's path, your authentic self rather than the 'black' path created by your parents, society, and the media that leads only to frustration and the internal ache is discontentment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Life Changing November 3, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film is life changing. It takes the work of Joseph Campbell, philosopher and mythologist, and brings it to the viewer by not only sharing his work and research regarding mythical stories, religious heroes and figures, and modern day heroes we see in films and books throughout the world in all cultures, but by weaving this knowledge into a story throughout the film that helps magnify and clarify the points being made. It challenges the listener to take control of their own life or accept what happens by seeking to understand oneself, and by embarking on "The Hero's Journey" within; through self acceptance, accepting difficulties in life, learning from them and making the best of these challenges, then foraging a path that is meaningful and lines up with one's inner bliss and values, and finally returning to others to share what you learned.

I found I enjoyed this film more each time I watched it. This film has no age barrier, as the Hero's Journey is a lifelong process - a series of journeys that are all an expression of each individual, woven together to teach many life lessons to others around us, and to encourage others to find their own path in life. Each of our journeys is different, yet the road map or the way to get through your journey is the same for everyone. First, you are separated from a reality you know, whether by choice or not, second, you are initiated into a new reality, finally, after living out your journey and finding your way through challenges, you return to share your story and experience, with others. The work in this film is profound and deep, and could be criticized by people who look at security and the societal view of Western perspectives of success as more important than inner joy and happiness, and may also be criticized as being "for the dreamer".

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding Joe June 19, 2012

Very inspirational as well as comforting. Something we can all relate to as we aspire to a greater experience of life. Suitable for families to share and discuss as it holds some valuable insights into how life isn't always easy for a good reason, but there is always a light at the end of our tunnel that makes it all worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than expected March 16, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This movie came to me at a very auspicious time. I'm not even sure I know why I ordered it. I just did. I think I was hoping for something to inspire me or perk me up as I move forward with the difficult task of finding a new job. At midlife, I find I'm one of the many Americans whose been laid off of work due to corporate restructuring. I consider myself to be a positive person, but it's been a tough journey.

The day that this movie arrived, I had just come home from an interview in another state and was exhausted, road weary, and depressed due to the sudden realization that I just can't work at another corporation, doing the work that I have always done. It was killing me, but I still need to earn a living. What am I going to do?? A definite low point.

That night I watched this movie. Honestly, I really couldn't focus on it too much because I was so tired, but something in me was waking up. I had a glimmer of hope. So I watched it again in the morning, caught a few more nuggets of truth, and the inspiration I was hoping for hit. Big time!

I've watched this movie a couple of more times since that night. Each time I catch something I hadn't caught before. It's been helping me a lot to understand where I'm at in my own Hero's Journey and how to view my life as a whole from a different framework or perspective. And in that space, I found not only the solution, but an excitement and joy that I haven't felt for a long time. It helped me to reconnect with my bliss again and brought me back to my Self. And I couldn't be more grateful! Granted, I still need a job, but I have a different roadmap now. One that feels infinitely more authentic and exciting!
