Review

"There are plenty of yoga "memoirs" out there that seem to be little more than self-congratulatory storytelling and recycled pseudo-spiritual platitudes. This is not one of those books. Finding More on the Mat is both funny and honest. If you read Poser and about yawned yourself to death this is for you. This is what I was hoping for from Poser, but didn't get. Michelle weaves practical yoga wisdom and life lessons into each chapter: "Love is just like yoga: You have to have a fearless heart. And you have to be willing to fail over and over again before you get it right." For me, my time on the mat is about finding more, not less. So when I read through Michelle's stories of parenting, divorce, trauma, finding love and taking all of it in with sense of humor and her own perfectly imperfect version of grace, I nod my head. It's not about less of anything. It's about finding more. It's about yoga, but it's about a lot more than that. If, like me, you struggle to find that balance between desire that moves you forward and contentment in where you are now both on and off the mat Finding More is for you." --Kate Bartolotta, Editor, Elephant Journal

"In a style similar to Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love," Michelle reveals her own version of the life story that many of us have experienced on our way to discovering inner peace and inner strength. I laughed out loud while reading this book and at the same time, the words touched my soul because I saw myself as she shared her personal experience. Whether you practice yoga or not, reading this book will help you understand why it is being practiced by millions of people in the world. Thank you for this easy to read and yet difficult to put down story about how one woman became so much more in her life by getting on her mat. This is one of the most inspirational and timely books on yoga in the world today. We need this book!" --Desiree Rumbaugh, Certified Anusara Yoga teacher

"Michelle's honest, warm and inviting story is a must-read for anyone seeking to find their truth through the practice of yoga. Growing older gracefully is no easy task, and Finding More on the Mat reminds us that we are not walking the path alone and that true wisdom and strength can only be found through dedicated efforts over the course of our lives. May this story inspire and bless your efforts." --Christina Sell, bestselling author of Yoga From the Inside Out: Making Peace with your Body through Yoga and My Body is a Temple: Yoga as a Path to Wholeness

"Yoga started in the East and since coming over to the West it has evolved into its own distinct offering with many diverse voices. One bright new voice on this scene is Michelle Marchildon. Hilarious, poignant, and real, Michelle delivers a down to earth account of how yoga touches and transforms us in all aspects of our lives. You won't want to put it down!" --Amy Ippoliti, international yoga teacher and earth advocate

Customer Reviews

Easy read but thought provoking!
CP Batchelor
Michelle is a wonderful storyteller and I love how her yoga story isn't about being beautifully perfect in the poses or having a perfect life.

What's one to do when the monkey mind is so much more entertaining in the oh-so-holy yoga world? For those who take their yoga really seriously, there are plenty of other books out there written by monks, masters and even some radical vegans. But for the rest of us, the way to levitation is levity. Just as comedy comes from pain, so too do all yogis come to yoga through pain. Yoga Muse Michelle Marchildon shares a lot with us about some very hard times (and one section comes with a serious trigger warning), but she also shares her belief that life doesn't have to be that way forever! Just in case, however, try yoga and at least get a good headstand out of your troubles. Yoga has been around for a long long time and has survived endless scandals, bad studio music and even underwear videos. Michelle doesn't banish her monkey mind so much as introduce us to it's funnier cheekier side through her own personal journey.

As a yoga teacher I've really enjoyed this book. Its easy to identify with the author, she's very "real", to read this you feel more as if you are sitting back "letting it all out" with a close friend more than simply reading a book. The reviews I read before purchasing this mentioned bad language, really?? There is barely any, I didnt find it offensive or excessive (at all) . Good job to Ms. Berman Marchildon, Namaste !

This book is about so much more than yoga! On the back cover it says "Meet Michelle Marchildon... the Erma Bombeck of the mat." and I couldn't agree more. Funny, irreverent, and insightful. When Michelle relates a story about a yoga teacher telling her to bring her arm closer to her heart I cried and if you read the book you'll know why. I've know Michelle for a few years. I've taken her classes and she's taken mine. We practice with some of the same teachers in Denver and I'm telling you this book is gospel with the f-word sprinkled in for good measure. If you are a yogi you will thoroughly enjoy it. If you have a moldering yoga mat sitting in your hall closet you may be inspired to rinse it off and give yoga another try... Who knows you may find more right there.

Ok. I know I am in the minority...but I really did not like this book. Shallow and self-gratifying. Sometimes makes me question if I want to be a member of this yoga club at all. Just irritating.

My Finding More on the Mat by Michelle Marchildon review is a long time coming. Right on schedule, spring got busy juggling family, work, teaching, life, a wedding, a funeral and plain old stuff. In the back of my head I kept thinking "I'll do write my review tomorrow" pretty much everyday in May. Finally "tomorrow" came and I sat down to write some questions for Michelle and had a V-8 head-smacking moment: Finding More is full of great reminders to sit back and enjoy the ride. Don't sweat the uncontrollable curve balls that come my way.

Michelle's life has been chocked full of curve balls. However, instead of letting them knock her out, she took the instruction from one of her teachers "to find her inner badass" . And badass she is. This book isn't just a nice story of her triumph, it is a frank guidebook to help us all get out of our own ways and find our alignment.

This book is just TERRIFIC! Anyone who loves yoga, who's interested in staying forever young and funny and engaging, who's looking at being AT HOME in their life AND their practice (yoga or anything else) ... or who's on a long plane ride and can't sleep in those crummy seats. READ THIS BOOK! It is as wonderful as Michelle's classes ... and if you live nowhere near Denver, where Michelle teaches, then you'll be doubly glad you have the book as part of your practice.

It took me a little bit get "hooked" on the writing style but then I couldn't put it down. She gives the reader a lot of great thoughts to ponder; many of those things are relevant to everyday life, as well as to yoga. I paused a little after most chapters just to digest and think about how that chapter's "lesson" was applicable to me. For instance, how grace should play a larger role in my life. Yes, life doesn't always seem fair but Michelle Marchildon teaches us how to accept and move on. And she helps us with our practice on the mat, too. I wished I lived close enough to be able to take her classes. It is on my short list of books that will be read again.

I LOVE memoirs and especially having to so with yoga but I personally didn't love the book..I think it just comes down to the fact that I just couldn't relate to the author. Nothing wrong with her writing it's just that we are just completely different people with completely different interests except for yoga. I do however know that most people would probably love the book and relate with the author perfectly it just wasn't for me.
