Book Description

0313342709 978-0313342707 January 18, 2010

This unique one-volume reference guide provides positive and empowering biographical sketches of 100 famous and well-known adoptees throughout time, serving to counter the many negative stereotypes that exist that exist about people who were adopted, fostered, or lived in orphanages. This work looks at the lives of people who, despite circumstances in their childhood, were able to succeed in making important contributions to art, music, science, literature, politics, and entrepreneurship. This work answers the call to obtaining difficult-to-find information about well-known adoptees. High school students and general readers who are interested in learning more about positive role models in adoption and children's issues will find this book invaluable.

McCaslin outlines the parameters she used for inclusion in the book, and then discusses the history of adoption from ancient civilization to today's society. Each entry focuses on the early life of the subject, as well as his or her career and achievements. Entries include Aristotle, Edward Albee, Ingrid Bergman, Oksana Baiul, Ella Fitzgerald, Faith Hill, Marilyn Monroe, Dave Thomas, Orson Welles and many more.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

What do Steve Jobs, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Orson Welles have in common? They were either adopted, fostered, or lived in an orphanage and are among the 100 individuals who fall under the same categories covered in this work. The volume begins with an alphabetical list of entries, followed by a list of entries according to “childhood experience” (survived abuse, for example) and a list of entries by occupational fields such as art, business, and sports. Each entry contains a person's major achievements, a brief biography, and details as to which of the three aforementioned categories the entrant belongs. Included in this volume are such names as John Audubon, adoptee turned painter and naturalist; Ralph Bunche, an orphaned statesman; and Dave Thomas, adoptee, philanthropist, and restaurateur. The entries are followed by three appendixes: winners of “Major Awards and Honors”; “Other Memorable Adoptees”; and “Religious, Mythical and Fictional Adoptees.” A detailed selected bibliography and index complete the work. The content found in the pages of this book is quite unique, providing insight into the lives of people who were not raised in the traditional family environment yet became distinguished throughout the world. This book would be an asset to large library collections. Also available as an e-book. --Carol Sue Harless
