Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. An eloquent reply to the modern mantra "I don't have time for spiritual practices," McQuiston presents—in minimalist fashion—42 vignettes describing people who find some way in their ordinary day to spend time with the Divine. Interspersed between stories about how Jack, Alice, Nabil and others live out their faith are McQuiston's own journal-style entries expressing his Christian mysticism. McQuiston, a Memphis attorney and author of Always We Begin Again, includes practices from a wide range of faith traditions. His subjects talk about the spiritual aspects of fishing, singing, meditation, walking and giving away their wealth. They also speak from the heart about prayer. Bhaskar, a Hindu surgeon, couldn't answer McQuiston's question about how his lifelong practice of prayer had shaped him "because there was no way to imagine the kind of person he would have been without prayer." Following the vignettes and personal reflections are two practical chapters—a suggested "menu" of practices and McQuiston's recommended reading list. Crystalline in focus and written in a style so straightforward that reading it slowly and meditatively over time could easily become part of one's spiritual practice, this small book is a precious gift that busy people, considering new ways of being with God, will likely want to carry around with them for inspiration.

This review is from: Finding Time for the Timeless: Spirituality in the Workweek (Hardcover)
Having read this author's book on his interpretation of The Rule of Benedict, I thought I knew what to expect in this offering. Fortunately, I was correct. He has a very easy-going, comfortable way of presentation, and it shows.
Reading these accounts of folks from all walks of life and of many and varied circumstance and beliefs, it was refreshing to know how important faith is to people, no matter their religion.
There is no question we can find the time to pray or worship or connect with whomever we believe in. The trick is finding the way to do it. After reading this, it would be nearly impossible to not be able to come up with a new idea or two...or several, that would fit into one's individual lifestyle.
Prayer is a discipline that needs routine and regularity. Having visited a Benedictine Monastery myself nearly a dozen times, it is very easy to follow the prayer schedule, because that is really all there is to do...the difficult part is incorporating some form of that into the typical, hectic everyday lives we lead.
This book has those practical, useful avenues to follow. Find your own path to prayer and use it to make your life even richer.
