Sloan Sawyer’s family began to dissolve the day her father died. Fifteen then, Sloan turned to her mother for comfort, and was turned away. Now, at eighteen, a senior in high school, Sloan is alone and playing the role of guardian for her fifteen-year-old younger sister, who appears to be hell bent on ruining her own life.

Along with trying to save her sister from herself, Sloan is working day and night to get into a prestigious art program, while working out twice a day to try and clinch a state title in swimming—the same state title that her mother won when she was Sloan’s age.

When an incident at school brings her into contact with the new kid, who also
happens to be the principal’s son, Sloan finds herself beginning one more relationship that she isn’t sure she knows how to handle.

Grady knows he can't handle a relationship...and still, he can't keep himself away from Sloan. Since that first day he's been drawn to her, and even though he knows their relationship can't go anywhere, he can't seem to stop himself from needing Sloan.

Yet, even with his feelings growing, Grady knows he can't share his past with her. He won't. So when Sloan confronts him about it, he has no choice but to leave her, even if that means leaving a part of himself with her.

An excellent story from a realist point of view will have you fully engrossed in minutes! This refreshing tale doesn't shy away from including the dark with the hopeful; and gives an excellent account of the love stories that aren't always sugar and spice. The characters have depth, the story has passion, and the talented writer gives you a story you want and need to hear. Do yourself a favor and read this immediately! I'm going to start it again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic contemporary! December 22, 2010
Format:Paperback
I thought this was an interesting and easy to read contemporary book. It has compelling characters and a realistic story line. Contrary to the cover- this is not a self help book. I say that because I was asked several times about the self help book I was reading. Once you read the book the cover makes sense, but before- not so much. But this is one you shouldn't judge by the cover.
I found I understood the main characters quite well. Sloan's personality was easy to read and understand and Grady was an easy character to fall in love with. The side character's were quite interesting as well- Maria, the fashion Goddess, and her boyfriend Bobby; and then Sloan's absent mother and her sister the teenager that's gone a bit crazy. There were others that were less important but were still well drawn characters. I thought the author did quite well with her character descriptions and I can't say I have any complaints.
The story line was pretty interesting. I won't say there wasn't anything that didn't bug me- I did find in the beginning I got a little bored, the story was moving along a bit too slowly for my taste. But things picked up and although there were the few bigger issues I think lack of conflict could be an issue for some when reading it. Personally I think I was happy with how things went. I teared up a few times, I felt enraged a few times, and I giggled a few times- so it had a bit of everything. The romance was sweet and the family issues seemed quite realistic to me. And really, that was what the main issues were about, family.
I think that this book is as good as most any contemporary book out there, and better then many I've read. It may not have the recognition with a big time publisher or a well known author, but it's definitely just as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for your collection December 28, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Sloan and Grady have chemistry from the first pages of this book. A beautifully written account of youth and relationships. This book doesn't gloss over life's difficulties, but at the same time it succeeds in maintaining hope and love. It is a great read and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a great romance novel. I would put this on the same level as other best selling authors who I read and love.

In particularly, I love the way it switched back and forth from Sloan's point of view to Grady's. It kept the novel interesting and gave it a unique perspective for the reader.
I really identified with Sloan's painting. As an artist myself, I really could picture Sloan painting and sketching. I could understand how Sloan was expressing her emotions and could picture her final pieces. I am a long way off from a gallery showing and a trip to Paris (oops kind of a spoiler), but it was nice to read a book with an artist's prespective. I loved it!

...Laughed at the Twilight spoofs too!

This is definately a book I will read over and over in the future because I can identify with the characters. I would love to see a sequel to this book! I felt like there were some lose ends that could be tied up in a sequel (with Sloan's mom and sister).

Can't what to read more books from an amazing author and teacher!!

Such an incredible story about high school and real struggles our students face. The book follows Grady and Sloan as they make great, realistic choices about their relationship, social trials and school issues. It is an addicting story that allows the reader to feeling a connection with all characters. I loved it!

More About the Author

Where to start?

I read and write love stories because I figure we need a reminder that everything can be made right, at least for a while, if we have someone who loves us for who we are, flaws and all (and I love a flawed character who drops the f bomb every now and then, or one who accidentally says the wrong thing at the wrong time). I write about young adults because I think that eighteen to twenty-two are the growing years--the years we usually branch out from those who are supposed to love us, and find those who are going to learn to love us, even if they break our hearts along the way.

I love Nora Efron movies, Nora Roberts books, coffee, large dogs, and my family. I read because it makes me happy, and I write because it makes me complete.
