“Sometimes we convince ourselves that people are hard to reach. We console our lack of spiritual fruit to a cultural malaise of all things spiritual. Dave and Jon Ferguson have another idea. They have somehow managed the incredible challenge to connect the dots of spiritual awakening in the culture and hearts of everyday people. Like expert craftsmen they have made what is incredibly hard into real life possibilities and strategies that seem easy! I've read Finding Your Way Back To God and have already considered buying a box so I can give it to all my friends and neighbours. You should too.”

“There is a constant gap in our lives between where we are and where we want to be. For years, I’ve longed to have a map to help me close that gap. This book is an answer to that longing! It’s a spiritual GPS to help you find where you are and to help you get where you’re going. It can help you find your way back to God over and over and over again. This book isn’t just for people seeking God for the first time—it’s also for anyone who wants to continue to get closer to God year after year. If you took the classic, “The Pilgrim’s Progress,” boiled it down into the main principles, and added modern-day stories, you would have this book in your hands. It’s that good!”

Pastors Dave and Jon Ferguson of Community Christian Church, a multi-site mega-church in Illinois, have written Finding Your Way Back to God with the hope that it will help people on this journey.
According to Rick Warren, Finding Your Way Back to God is, “Absolutely life-changing! Dave and Jon Ferguson have written a book that could change how our generation thinks about God.” That is high praise that doesn’t just border on hype, it’s an atomic bomb; a declaration that the war is now over because we said so. If Rick Warren is right, this is the last book we’ll need on finding purpose for at least the next 30 years.
Does the book live up to that kind of hype? Unfortunately, it doesn’t. While the Fergusons remind us of God’s love and grace they fail to tell us why it matters and the personal cost involved. This sets up several problems that make the book more confusing than helpful.
#1 – Expectations
Whenever we talk about God and what it means to be a Christian it is important that we set proper expectations. In the book we are told to expect that we can find a power greater than ourselves to make it through life, discover unconditional love to transform how you think and feel, find a way to love others the way you want to be loved, purpose for life that gets you out of bed and excited every day, and hope for this life and the next.Read more ›
Finding Your Way Back to God is very well-written and might be one of the easiest books to read I’ve ever come across. At the same time, it is packed with provocative stories of life-change and redemption.
One of my favorite things about Finding Your Way Back to God is its built-in potential to be used as an “I’ll read it with you” resource. If you have a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker or a family member that you’ve been hoping and looking for ways to help them take a step toward God, this is a book you need to know about.
As the subtitle indicates, there are five awakenings “that almost always occur in a person’s journey back to God.” I like the way the authors describe the awakenings: “Where people start and what motivates them to begin this journey are often different, but the stages they go through are remarkably similar.” The book explores five different “God, if you are real” prayers that are intended to arouse the five awakenings.
The book also includes an intriguing element; one that I am looking forward to sharing with a few friends. Referred to as a Thirty Day Wager, the last chapter of Finding Your Way Back to God is actually a kind of 30 day journal to be used by anyone willing to put 15 minutes a day into an honest pursuit to find God. If you take a few minutes to flip through these pages you’ll begin thinking about people you know who could be persuaded to make the wager.Read more ›
The book uses the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 to elaborate the various points it proclaims in it's pages. It is divided into five sections, each with the subject of 'awakening' at the forefront, including awakening to longing, regret, help, love and life. Through some of the scriptures found in the story of the Prodigal Son, and many tales of lives who were altered by the principles discussed in each chapter, the authors weave a tale of self discovery, ending with a life that most people desire, but don't often see. They also include a study guide at the end, with questions for discussion about the topics that are addressed.
Finding Your Way Back to God is probably very good for a non-believer or Christian who feels they have stumbled beyond restoration. And many of the stories in it's pages tell of these type of experiences. For that reason it will be a benefit to many people. However, I am noticing a trend in Christian literature that has become more stories while focusing less on scripture. While the authors do use the Prodigal Son as the backdrop of their book, it is not a book based on the Bible. It is a book that contains scriptures to support it's points, similar to the way we might use famous quotes which illustrate what we're trying to say. This is one of the points you need to be aware of.Read more ›
