Editorial Reviews

Review

“Dr. Kneier has written a compassionate, wise, and accessible book about living with cancer. He lets those who are on that journey illuminate your way.”
—David Spiegel, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Stanford University School of Medicine, and author of Living Beyond Limits

“In this beautifully written book, Dr. Kneier calls out the inherent emotional suffering that often intrudes, disrupts, and persists for many diagnosed with and treated for cancer. I will definitely recommend this to all of my patients.”
—Laura Esserman, MD, Surgical Oncologist, UCSF Medical Center

The work can be liberating for those cancer patients that are psychologically stuck or who have unhealthy emotional reactions.

It's not like he was trying to tell me how to feel, like those that say "think positive thoughts and things will be better".

I was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer 1 year ago, and have now been through a mastectomy and chemo. While home on short-term disability, I read more than 50 books on cancer, in my efforts to understand what was happening to me from a medical standpoint and to cope with it psychologically. This book was the best one I read all year. It literally made me feel as if I were sitting down with a skilled therapist and getting some much-needed help. The author has obviously learned a huge amount from the cancer patients he has known (whom he credits throughout the book--he thinks of himself as merely passing on their wisdom to other cancer patients). This book shed light on many feelings and family situations I've experienced. I plan to read this book again and again, and to use it as a starting point if and when I see a therapist. Highly recommended!

Format: Paperback
Dr. Kneier has written a superb and profoundly helpful book. I am a clinical psychologist and in a heartbeat I would recommend this book to my cancer patients. The work is filled with wisdom and reflects the author's decades of experience. The author is honest and realistic yet also deeply compassionate and hopeful. The book is extremely well written, touching, and often moving. The work provides cancer patients with useful psychological guideposts and practical advice. The work is also philosophical and deals with central issues and dilemmas of life and death.

The author guides people with cancer through the emotional territory needed to face the disease. The book addresses the emotional challenges of cancer and does not ignore their complexity and difficulty. The book's scope is comprehensive and helps someone with cancer deal with the wide range of emotional, interpersonal and psychological aspects of cancer. The work can be liberating for those cancer patients that are psychologically stuck or who have unhealthy emotional reactions. The author sheds light on critical issues involving a cancer patient's relationships with family and friends, and he recognizes the central role of connectedness to others.

This book is not just a "how to guide" about dealing with cancer but is a work which empowers a person with cancer. While the book is practical and offers profoundly helpful guidance, the book is also existential and encourages the person with cancer toward a search for meaning.

Wow, what a powerful and insightful book. Dr. Kneier writes with empathy and uses words that inspire. He finds the "right" words for many situations when dealing with cancer. One of the ten essays broaches the subject of God and covers what many might find helpful when dealing with "feelings" associated with this horrible disease called cancer. Trying to find that positive attitude, finding gratitude when there seems to be none, and how one might help a friend or loved one maneuver through the many stages of this disease are all covered in this wonderfully written paperback. Thank you Dr. Kneier for taking the time to help others; your kindness goes beyond words. This book will help many "find their way".Finding Your Way through Cancer: An Expert Cancer Psychologist Helps Patients and Survivors Face the Challenges of Illness
