Book Description

11 and up6 and up
It's been almost a year since the automobile accident, but Crystal is still struggling with the belief that it was somehow her fault; her fault that her father is dead, her fault that she is confined to a wheelchair. Now Crystal must deal with yet more grief. Her grandmother's recent death has left Crystal and her mother with the painful talk of sorting through Gram's possessions - and facing their own memories. It's then that Crystal's life takes another turn. Her mother is suddenly offered an art exhibition at a gallery in New Mexico - an opportunity she can't afford to turn down. While she's away, Crystal is left in the care of an eccentric friend of her grandmother's named Zola. But Zola, Crystal soon discovers, is suffering memory loss. And one day she disappears. Has she wandered into the life-threatening heat of the Arizona desert? Has she simply gone on a trip with her brother? Or is there something more sinister involved? A series of alarming incidents convinces Crystal that she must find Zola as quickly as possible. Two mysteries escalate simultaneously in Marianne Mitchell's vividly written novel. The question "Where's Zola?" forces Crystal to confront another equally baffling question: Now that her life has changed so dramatically, who is Crystal?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-This suspenseful mystery features 13-year-old Crystal, who is grieving for her father who died in an auto accident that left her in a wheelchair. Because of her grandmother's recent death, she and her mother are at Gran's townhouse sorting through her possessions. When her mother is unexpectedly called away for a week to show her artwork at a gallery in Santa Fe, Gran's elderly neighbor, Zola, agrees to keep an eye on Crystal and Cousin DJ, a college student, comes to visit. When Zola does not show up for dinner as planned, Crystal and DJ need to find out if the forgetful woman has wandered off, is on a trip with her brother, or has come to some harm. A little Spanish adds detail to the Arizona locale and Gran's Mexican heritage. Crystal's dreams and memories of her father and grandmother are well handled and evoke sympathy, and the characters are developed appropriately enough to make solving the mystery interesting. The son of one of Gran's neighbors adds a hint of romantic interest. Pacing is fast enough to entertain reluctant readers, and the book will appeal to avid mystery fans.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. Tormented with guilt, 13-year-old Crystal suffers a recurring dream about the auto accident that killed her father and left her paralyzed. Now, a year after the accident, Crystal and her mom are packing up Gran's home after her recent death. When Mom is called away on business, elderly Zola, Gran's forgetful, but well-meaning, neighbor comes to stay with Crystal. Fortunately, older cousin DJ stays with her, too, because Zola disappears. Crystal is certain something sinister has happened, and there is plenty of page-turning suspense as she and DJ search for Zola. The girls' actions stretch credibility and often seem foolish, and readers won't be as convinced as Crystal is that Dad's ghost is what rescues her from the life-threatening crises created by her snooping. It's great, however, when Crystal sheds her guilt and emerges more confident of her own abilities, and her adventures will entertain as they heighten awareness of the physical and emotional challenges of the disabled. More About the Author

Once upon a time I was a teacher with assignments ranging from first grade to college level. Those were fun jobs but also lots of work. When I started writing stories for children I discovered a new profession and a new passion. As a bonus, I now have a good excuse not to be a total grown-up. Over the years I've been fortunate to publish nine books and about two hundred stories and articles in children's magazines such as Highlights for Children and Highlights High Five.

My picture books include Maya Moon (a Mexican folktale), Joe Cinders (a Cinder-fella tale), and Gullywasher Gulch (a tall tale). As an Arizona native, I love using the west as a background in my stories. Finding Zola is a mystery set in southern Arizona near Tucson. A second mystery, Firebug, is set among the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona. My anthology, Windows of Gold, offers a variety of short stories: adventure, mystery, animals, fantasy, and folktales. Most of these stories were originally published in Highlights for Children. I've also dug into my own family history for story material. My latest project, A Promise Made, is a young adult novel inspired by a long, lost great auntie with a mysterious past. It's set in the mining town of Silver Plume, Colorado in 1884.

Although I now write full time, I still enjoy coming to schools and talking to kids about books and writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding Zola: The Tale of an Independent Heroine, September 14, 2003
This review is from: Finding Zola (Hardcover)
Crystal Ramos, the thirteen-year-old heroine of Finding Zola, is adjusting to life in a wheelchair. Crystal has been paralyzed as the result of a car accident in which her father was killed. The author, Marianne Mitchell, skillfully weaves a mystery while subtly teaching readers that individuals with disabilities can lead interesting, independent lives. This book could be used to increase students' respect for the elderly and for individuals with disabilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Mystery, April 26, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Finding Zola (Hardcover)
I just finished reading Finding Zola, and felt compelled to let the author and future readers know what an enjoyable read it is. The story held my interest from the first page.

I was impressed with the clever/flawless ways Ms. Mitchell wove all the little details together. Her vivid descriptions and dialogue are extraordinary; they made me feel I was there with Crystal. The culprits were a total surprise to me, and the dramatic scenes that followed their revelation had me on the edge of my seat. I predict that this novel will win acclaim, and have a very long shelf life.

Signed,
A fan
