Book Description

October 1, 2009
Heralded as "Best Acting Teacher in LA" by Back Stage magazine, Hollywood’s most sought after acting teacher Howard Fine reveals the winning technique that has garnered his students international acclaim and the industry’s highest honors in his astonishing book FINE ON ACTING. During his twenty-five years as a teacher and director, Fine has developed a technique that is both useful and exciting. Emmy Award®-winning actor Michael Chiklis (THE SHIELD, FANTASTIC FOUR) writes in the foreword for FINE ON ACTING, “You’ve purchased this book because you either aspire to be an actor or want to be a better one. Either way you’ve made a wonderful decision. Howard Fine is a great teacher. His philosophy and approach to the craft of acting are the most helpful, encouraging and practically applicable I’ve ever encountered.” FINE ON ACTING covers the essentials for actors, including The Common Mistakes, Rehearsal, Auditions, Stage vs. Television and Film Acting, and Comedy vs. Drama. Fine also offers valuable advice for troubleshooting challenging situations, such as playing opposite a bad actor, nerves, memorizing lines, working with a bad director, and being emotionally blocked. A close colleague of the legendary Uta Hagen and the founder of the Howard Fine Acting Studio, Fine has worked with hundreds of stars, including Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake, Lindsay Lohan, Salma Hayek, Simon Baker, Amanda Bynes, Gerard Butler, Jennifer Connelly, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Williams, Val Kilmer, Sela Ward, Jason Priestley, Kerry Washington, Amy Smart, Jared Leto, Wilmer Valderrama, Brooke Shields, Daryl Hannah, Rick Fox, Estella Warren, Christopher Meloni, Enrique Murciano, Garry Shandling, Alexa Vega, Heather Locklear, Geri Halliwell, Carla Gugino, James Belushi, Diana Ross, Jon Bon Jovi, and Josh Groban. Fine is one of the few elite acting experts who has devoted his primary career to perfecting the teaching and coaching of professional actors. His outstanding reputation is the product of his remarkable expertise uniquely coupled with his extraordinary gift to inspire.

More About the Author

Howard Fine is an American acting teacher, the founder of the Howard Fine Acting Studio in Hollywood, CA, and also a theatre director whose credits include directing on Broadway.

Howard Fine was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He is the youngest of five children. His parents Max, an American GI, and Nelly, a Holocaust survivor, married in Shanghai, China, before Max returned to the US with Nelly as a war bride.

Due to a fluke scheduling conflict between French and German classes, Fine ended up taking his first theatre class in high school. His drama teacher spotted Fine's directing talent and gave him his first play to direct, Edward Allbee's The Sandbox, at age 16.

Fine was first introduced to his mentor, Uta Hagen's, work while in the same high school drama class. His teacher taught from Hagen's first book, "Respect for Acting," and he would take the theatre classes to New York to watch classes at Uta's HB studios. Fine and Hagen remained close friends until her death.

After completing graduate school in Boston, Fine moved to New York where he landed his first teaching job at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy. After one semester of teaching, he was promoted to head the Acting Department at the young age of 24 making him the youngest chair in the studio's history.

In 1985, Fine moved to Los Angeles with his best friend, voice coach David Coury. Fine began his career in Los Angeles by privately coaching students in his living room, but in 1988 had to expand to accommodate his growing classes. His studio relocated three times before occupying its present location (formerly the Hollywood Playhouse) on North Las Palmas Avenue in Hollywood.

For five consecutive years, Fine has been asked by the Los Angeles Times to analyze the acting of the Oscar Nominees. His Oscar commentary has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, Extra, Access Hollywood, E, Sky TV, BBC and CNN. In addition to The Los Angeles Times, Fine has been quoted in The Times, The Christian Science Monitor, and USA Today Weekend, and has spoken on numerous radio shows nationwide.

Fine has appeared as himself in numerous reality shows including, Confessions of a Teen Idol, Next Action Star, The Anna Nicole Show, MTV's The Big Picture, It Girls, Twenty Four-Seven, and on many E True Hollywood stories and A&E Biographies. Recently he appeared as himself in the film Spiritual Warriors.

His is the author of FINE ON ACTING (October 2009; Havenhurst Books) which he wrote with award-winning writer and editor Chris Freeman. The foreword was written by Fine's longtime student and friend Michael Chiklis.

I can't write a review that will do this book justice but...

If you're ready to roll up your sleeves and put the work in, Fine on Acting gives you the tools to build the foundation for a successful acting career. In a very short amount of time it has already allowed me to make several breakthroughs in my acting work. What is so valuable about this book is that it's not a conceptual take on the craft but rather a clear and accessible outline of the technique that will allow you to bring spontaneous life to your work. Thank you for writing this book Howard Fine. As long as I am acting this book will be by my side.

Just a few things of note:

The forward by Michael Chiklis inspires you in a way that makes you want to read the entire book in one sitting...and I did.

I really enjoyed Howard Fine's "Who Am I?" at the beginning of the book. It was revealing and extremely interesting and it allowed me to read ahead knowing that I was in good hands. I now understand why he is the most sought after acting teacher in Hollywood.

The Common Mistakes section of the book will shine a light on the habits that are most likely keeping your work from reaching new levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ONLY ACTING BOOK YOU WILL EVER NEED!, October 22, 2009
This review is from: Fine on Acting: A Vision of the Craft (Paperback)
Throughout my acting career I have read many books and taken many classes. I have learned more from Howard Fine in the last year that I had in the previous 17 years of craft development. This book encompasses his gift as an acting educator. As an actor who continues to improve and grow, I need no other educator that Howard Fine and his studio of visionaries.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ if you have any desire to act on the level it takes to be recognized.

Howard Fine's new book on acting is like no other. For a quarter of a century, Mr. Fine has honed a technique that is highly practical yet richly textured. Demystifying the process, he helps actors develop the tools within themselves to access powerful, authentic, and exciting performances.

Fine on Acting is surprisingly conversational - while maintaining the integrity of a world-class resource.

Actors, this is it.

Bravo!
