Book Description

Milner Craft December 2001
Découpage itself can be a fine art, especially when you use as subject matter photos cut from magazines featuring paintings, sculptures, and other works by your favorite artists. A master of the craft will teach you the basic techniques for working with flat and curved surfaces, backgrounds, motifs, finishing seals and glues, as well as the styles of sponging, gilding, antiquing, and distressing, plus oriental finishes, marble illusions, stone finishes, tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, and fresco. Then you're ready to try the author's own favorite projects that feature the art of the old masters, including an oriental screen, antiqued box, powder bowl, jewelry case, vases, plaques, ostrich egg, and drop-table. Dozens of "Handy Hints" reveal the artist's secrets for creating special effects.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Cochrane's sophisticated approach to the Venice-invented "poor man's art" incorporates decoupage and decorative painting. The author combines the craft's basic elements common to all visual arts--space, proportion, line, texture, and color--with the processes necessary to produce an illustrated item, from surface preparation to sanding and varnishing. What happens next is not a procession of patterns. Rather, she examines a few dozen different techniques, including sponging, stippling, and faux malachite, as projects. Although no pictures show the actual process, the numbered step-by-steps give readers general directions about how to achieve certain effects. Glossary, suggested reading, and suppliers appended. 4.0 out of 5 stars better imagery than average in decoupage books, November 3, 2011
there is nothing terribly original, bold or daring about the author's art work in decoupage. However, if one sticks to Renaissance painting with artists like Raphael and Botticelli, it is really hard to end up with bad images. so she wins hands down so far imagery wise in the decoupage art books. she combines these art works with some very beautiful marbled and other specialty papers which set off these paintings beautifully. she explains she is a great lover of art history and that is why she does decoupage. i think for other old master lovers out there, this may indeed be the perfect medium of expression. i Am sure these are quite commercially salable as well. i'd be tempted to buy one.

she also gives good directions on how to decoupage although I still like NEW DECOUPAGE'S instructions best. she also gives a few chapters of basic art and design principles. although since the Renaissance artists were masters at this, it isn't strictly necessary for her kind of work. i'm not even sure a good aesthetic sense can be taught to someone without such a sense.
