A cheerful little earful,
By Spinner "jd" (Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fine & Dandy (Audio CD)
Debbie Reynold's swinging 1960 Dot Records album FINE AND DANDY is re-issued as a Japanese 20-bit release. Backed by Jerry Fielding's lively orchestra, Debbie tackles such upbeat numbers as "Pick Yourself Up", "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries","Fine and Dandy" and "Give Me the Simple Life". Certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but a great listen every now and then. Reynolds is in top vocal form here and is a surprisingly effective swinger. Never a top singer by any means, Reynolds' kooky persona makes her voice a pleasant force. This is a fun piece of 1960s kitsch, long before the dawn of Prozac.

A GREAT SINGER FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF MUSICALS,
By L'auteur "L'auteur" (Paris, France) - See all my reviews

Debbie Reynolds was not only a great actress, but also a great singer (remember "Singing In The Rain"?). The good surprise with this CD comes from the good choice of songs and the really good performance of Mrs. Reynolds. She can swing, belt and puts a lot of joy in each and every tune. In a time of singing consternation, such singers must be (re)discovered! A singing and swinging feast!

"Fine and Dandy" consists of uptempo, swinging standards
beautifully executed by Debbie Reynolds showing great musicality, and an impeccable way with words and phrasing. Musical director is Jerry Fielding. A classic recording!

I had been searching for this item for a very long time, and I have only recently been able to aquire a copy of it. It is a shame that this item was only available as a limited edition Japanese release because this album, in my opinion, is one of Debbie's best. The song arrangements as well as Debbie's vocals are top-noch and it is altogether a very pleasant album. Another nice touch is that it comes in a special miniature LP record sleeve-style CD case with full song lyrics (in English). Though I think it should be readily available in the United States, since it is not, I think the high price you may have to pay for it is well worth it. The only bad thing about the album itself is its short running time of around only 30 minutes.
