Editorial Reviews

Jane's curves beautified the big screen in the '40s and '50s, but it was her lovely voice that brought her from radio to studio to stage for decades. Here's her only solo album, issued in '59, arranged by Billy May and debuting on CD, including bonus rarities!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine and Dandy - Jane Russell, September 18, 2010

Great sound and selection of songs! Some of the song selections are from the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" that stared Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. Jane Russell's looks and singing strongly appealed to men. The songs with the arrangements and her singing make for some very enjoyable listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Will Never Be Another Jane, September 12, 2011

Jane Russell, who passed away recently, isn't remembered as much as she should be; she was a versatile performer! However, with continued sales of CDs like this one maybe that will change. Jane sings very well throughout this album; there's not a bad track in the lot. The quality of the sound is very good, too.

"Fine and Dandy" starts the track set with Jane performing very well; her sophisticated phrasing impresses me. "Take Love Easy" is just one of the many tracks on the CD that showcase Jane's excellent diction; she aces this as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing. "Love on the Rocks" isn't all that happy; but in Jane's more than capable hands it remains a very memorable song. "When a Woman Loves a Man" is beautifully done with great sensitivity; I could never tire of hearing Jane sing numbers like this.

"Can't We Talk It Over" has a rather intimate, heartbroken quality to it that makes it a standout of the album; and "You Don't Know What Love Is" couldn't have been done any better--I like that percussion, too! "Our Love Is Here to Stay" charms me with its beauty; Jane never sounded better and that's grand. "The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else)" has a fine melody even if this is another not so happy tune; and listen for yet another gem when Jane Russell sings "How Long Has This Been Going On." "How Long Has This Been Going On" is extremely well done as Jane makes it her own by playing just a bit with the tempo and keys. "You're Mine, You" is also very well done; and I really like "Born to Be Blue" which Jane infuses with so much genuine passion.

"There Will Never Be Another You" shines bright when Jane sings it so very well; her talent carries her through and makes this a showstopper indeed! "Sing You Singers" gets an excellent treatment from Jane and the musicians; although wisely they never even try to steal the show from Jane. "I've Got the World on a String" stuns me when Jane sings it to perfection--and beyond! "One Way Ticket to the Blues" leaves nothing to be desired; and then we get the two outstanding bonus closing tracks, "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" along with "One for My Baby." It leaves me wanting more!

Jane Russell will forever remain one of the brightest stars ever; albums like this prove she could do so much more than just act. This is a must-have for Jane Russell fans; and it makes a fine CD for people just discovering Jane's talent. People who like evergreen standards will also find much to like on this album.

Jane Russell proves yet again by this album that she is a terrific singer! Her Best songs on this album is "One Way Ticket to the Blues," "Fine and Dandy," "I've Got the World on a String," and " Love on the Rocks." If you love the 1940's-1950's vibe music this is definitely for you!
