Review

Fine Foliage is one of Amazon's ""Best of the Year"" Garden Books.

It’s not just about flowers anymore. The big idea for containers and gardens today is foliage combinations— creating the perfect marriage of foliage colors, textures and shapes for year-round enjoyment. In Fine Foliage, garden designers Karen Chapman and Christina Salwitz showcase more than 60 inspired plant partnerships. Each combination is given a two-page spread with color photographs of the grouping and the individual plants within it.  Plant details include sun or shade requirements, seasons, zones, soil preference, and plant characteristics and care. Easy-to-use instructions allow gardeners of all skill levels to bring elegant, expert design and style to their gardens and patios.

Michigan Gardener, September-October 2013 issue

"Fine Foliage: Elegant Plant Combinations for Garden and Container does much more than celebrate gorgeous foliage specimens, which by now are enjoying the popularity once reserved for blooming plants. The book groups foliage plants (and the occasional bloomer) that have complementary and contrasting features–and can live together happily in the climate they were meant for. If you are looking for groupings based on color, texture, light needs, zone or any other characteristic, Fine Foliage makes it easy to find what you need. More importantly, these combinations have been proven successful by the authors themselves, who have tried many mixes before narrowing to these ones." (Sarah Ristorcelli Eye on the Garden)

Whether you are a landscape designer who creates containers for your clients or a home gardener, reading this book is a must. -Bobbie Schwartz, Bobbie's Green Thumb

Christina Salwitz is a design professional who successfully translates design principles into stunning plantings. Her ability to combine color and form creates beautiful garden tapestries. -Patty Dunning, Horticulture magazine content leader

Christina Salwitz shares her considerable design talents with fellow gardeners. Those looking to take their garden creativity beyond the usual blooms and into the realm of foliage composition will be well rewarded. -Eric Liskey, Deputy Editor, Gardens & Outdoor Living, Better Homes and Gardens

In her garden designs and containers, Christina conbines plants in ways that are simple yet asthetically delightful and innovative. Christina's work has made such an impression on me, whenever I see a leaf with great variegation, texture or vining, I think of her. -Debra Lee Baldwin, author of three books on using succulent plants in garden design

I only wish Karen Chapman lived close to me so that she could be my personal gardening coach. Rarely do you find a garden designer who not only can create dazzling plant combinations but also is able to teach the rest of us how to do the same. -Danielle Sherry, Senior Editor, Fine Gardening

Christina's container designs are bold and arresting. She is fearless when it comes to combining color, texture and shape in a small area. -Susan Cohan, APLD, Co-founder and Editor of Leaf magazine

Garden lovers, you now have the secret for creating the landscape of your dreams - the ones you see in magazines and wonder: 'How do those designers DO THAT? Christina and Karen show you how to look beyond the flowers and introduce you to the real stars of the horticultural world - LEAVES! -Ivette Soler, Garden designer and author of The Edible Front Yard

Karen Chapman's container designs prove that the eye of a talented designer can inspire a whole new appreciation for the amazing variety of colors and textures to be found in the beautiful but often overlooked world of foliage. -James Augustus Baggett, Editor, Country Gardens

I like practical gardening books. Books that make it easy for me to take the information and translate it to my own garden. Even though I've been gardening for years, design is one area where I have challenges. I'm also into foliage, particularly evergreen foliage, because I live in the South, and I can enjoy a nice-looking garden year-round with a bit of effort.

The photography in the book is beautiful and nicely illustrates the points. The overall layout makes it easy to pick up, take to the garden center, and really use. Not only do you get lists of plant combinations, you see a photo of the plants together and individual photos of each plant. You learn why the combination works--so you can apply those principles to other areas of your gardening and build upon your knowledge as you look at the book.

Fine Foliage is pretty enough to be a coffee table book, but small enough to be easy to tuck into your purse to take with you while plant shopping. Highly recommend!

Disclaimer: The authors are friends of mine and I write for the same publisher, but I didn't see this book until it came in the mail. So, opinions are totally my own unless you buy me a drink, in which case opinions are still totally my own but we'll have a fun evening.

This book is like horticultural eye candy--it's not often that I get a book and can't put it down until I see every page. The photography is so gorgeous, and the foliage combinations that Karen and Christina came up with are pure genius. I've long admired their work, and as a designer, it reminds me to up my game when it comes to foliage colors and textures. Thank you for a wonderful book--it will be a trusted resource for me as I put together not only my own landscape but those of my clients'.

Good visuals, which is what designing with plants is all about. Unfortunately not all of the combinations are happy in the same growing conditions. Also, some of the plants suggested can be real aggressive thugs in a fertile garden setting. Best to do a little outside research before you decide to try any of the suggested combos. On balance its still a book worth having in your library.

Where do I begin? The photos in this book are both breathtaking and inspiring. It's also very useful when using to design containers and gardens. The authors are very detail oriented and useful for those of us who need some guidance on great plant pairings. As a lifelong gardener there are many surprising combinations of plants that I have never thought of before. As a previous reviewer said, the book size is perfect for putting in your bag for nursery shopping trips.

If you're in need of inspirational color combinations, this book is a must-have for your library. Each combination is simply designed to not only inspire, but to educate with reasons WHY it works. The explanations are what will help you successfully reinterpret the combination using plants that work in your climate. As a fellow designer, I really appreciate the focus of the book - helping others create stunning foliage displays in the garden designed to last far longer than the fleeting performance of flowers. This is the type of book you want to look at over and over again, the photos are just THAT gorgeous! Would I recommend it to others? Absolutely!!

As a garden designer so often my clients underestimate the powerful advantage of foliage combinations. Congratulations to the authors! A book which captures the imagination and clearly illustrates how beautiful combinations of leaves can be as compelling as bloom. Inspiration and practical advice for all seeking the oh-so elusive "stunning but low maintenance" garden.
