If your head swims in the paint aisle of a hardware store as you try to figure out the difference between tung and Danish oil, or you wonder whether to use wet versus dry sandpaper, class is in session. Master finisher David Sorg slowly takes you through several projects that demonstrate furniture finishing techniques and the products that will get the job done. A chair is given an oil and wax finish, a jewelry box is shellacked, a pair of mahogany chests are stained and varnished, and side tables acquire an Asian feel through refinishing and faux marbling. This is no 5-minute spin on a morning talk show--this 158- minute tape is more like a master class. Even a slapdash work by Sorg includes painstaking steps as he imparts a lot of good factoids (how to tell when you need a new paintbrush, for instance) to lead you to create your own master works. --Valerie J. Nelson

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Furniture Finishing, Vols. 1 and 2, June 11, 2000
This review is from: Fine Furniture Finishing, Volume 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I thought I knew a little something about finishing furniture until I saw these excellent videos. David Sorg's narration provided me with an educational experience unlike any other I have ever received from a do-it-yourself video. His intuitive teaching skills come through as he guides the listener step-by-step through each phase of his projects.

Since I love nothing more than a good bargain, I had several odd pieces of old furniture I had picked up at yard sales. With the help of Sorg's instructions on a tung oil finish, I transformed a dusty $5 wooden chair into a charming side chair for my kitchen. When not in use, it holds my prize ivy plant, which I move from the foyer to the kitchen/dining area. I also had an end table which belonged to my parents that I finished according to Sorg's instructions for creating the look of marble. It turned out beautiful!

I would recommend this video series to anyone who wants to make something out of nothing, update the look of a room, or just wants to learn the basics of quality furniture finishing. Thanks for the education!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and helpful, March 31, 2000
This review is from: Fine Furniture Finishing, Volume 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I found David Sorg's videos to be entertaining and helpful. My husband and I both enjoyed David's style of teaching and his very informative videos. We ordered both videos and now have a list of projects we're excited to complete. I especially liked the suggestions he gave for purchasing supplies to get started right away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine product, March 26, 2000
This review is from: Fine Furniture Finishing, Volume 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
These tapes were great! I was really drawn into them because they not only offered a lot of easy-to-understand information and the best products to use for the job, but they showed how to create a piece of artwork from an everyday piece of furntiture. David's relaxed style of presentation was terrific. These tapes were especially helpful because they explained the "why" of each step, and allowed me to try new things on my own without being afraid to make mistakes".
