More About the Author

Laura Matthews has been writing for more than twenty years. She is the author of thirty novels, mostly Regency (as Laura Matthews) and contemporary women's fiction (as Elizabeth Neff Walker). Her love of the Regency period developed from reading Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen.

Ms. Matthews lives in San Francisco with her architect husband Paul and their two dogs. Their children are grown, which gives them more time to travel and explore. Ms. Matthews actively pursues her research interests (the Regency period and medical sociology) by membership in her local Jane Austen Society and by volunteering at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read, April 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Fine Gentleman (Paperback)
Although it started out a bit slow, there was a great element of mystery that kept me reading on. The romance is developed slowly, they dont just hate each other one minute and love each other the next. The heroine is not wimpy or weepy, and the hero is very likeable. Matthews' writing comes pretty close to my favorites: Emma Jensen and Lynn Kerstan. A refreshing book with an interesting plot and plenty of unpredictable twists!

5.0 out of 5 stars charming, November 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Fine Gentleman (Paperback)
A delightful love story. The characters are appealing and the story pleasing. I do wish that Ms. Mathews would be a tad more careful about the period details. Off-the-rack clothing for children or adults, for example, was not available even in London in 1817. The concept of ready-to-wear clothing would not be introduced until the late 1840's - and even then only for the lower classes. With the exception of sailors, who could buy clothes ready to wear in dockside shops that catered for them, everyone wore homemade or custom-made clothes. Silliness like village shops that stock children's frocks appropriate for a gentleman's daughter are very off-putting.
