A second-tier Tossers album,

This isn't as good as Valley of the Shadow of Death or Agony. I peg it at four stars, about the same as Purgatory. It has a number of a songs that fall into the "generic Tossers song" category.
It has two instrumentals, the first of which (221B...) really rocks. Fans of The Sheep in the Boots will dig it. The other instrumental is just OK. There's also a great instrumental bit at the end Unfamous Paula Spencer, kinda like the way Flogging Molly closes Black Friday Rule. What Becca does here, though, is much more evocative. Their rendition of Rocky Road to Dublin is surprisingly restrained. I was expecting a real rocker when I saw that on the track list, but I'm appreciating the sparse treatment they give it here. Deep and mean. If you're familiar with live Teehan's on Gloatin' & Showboatin', check out the very cool treatment they give to the opening here on the album version. I wish the whole song sounded like that. The single best part of this album: the "Chicago..." refrain at the end of A Fine Lass You Are. That brought the house down at their show outside Chicago this past weekend. They actually played most (if not all) of this album, which improved my opinion of most of it. The only exception was Hunger Strike/Harmony. Boring. I usually skip it on the CD, and I begrudged the stage time it stole. We went out to smoke. Anyway, it's a good record, but not their best. If you already like The Tossers, you'll like this. If you're just discovering them, I'd start with Valley of the Shadow of Death, Agony, or Gloatin' & Showboatin' instead. Toss on.

Hands down, the finest of the Pogues-influenced Irish punk bands. No apologies to the 2 biggies that are too often cited when discussing Irish punk in America. T.Duggins spits out his lyrics with believable passion and has an incredible knack for creating lasting melodies. The Tossers are in a bit of a holding pattern as their last 3 albums are all equally good. So as long as they reject the thin, sophomoric singalongs like 'No Loot, No Booze, No Fun' they'll be tops in my book.

Why aren't these guys super famous?,
This review is from: On a Fine Spring Evening (Audio CD)
I can't believe that The Tossers have produced 7 studio albums and I've only recently heard of them! They're a band from Chicago, Illinois who play what I would describe as Irish-style punk rock music, think The Pogues - but much quicker.
I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers who claimed that this album wasn't the bands best, I absolutely love it and think it's far better than "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" which is still a very good album. "On a Fine Spring Evening" is very up tempo all the way through, which is definitely the way celtic rock should be. The first three songs are a great way to start - "Katie at the Races", "Teehans" and "The Unfamous Paula Spencer" are all brilliant and my favourite, but thats not to take away from the rest of the album. This sounds like Irish, fast paced, alcohol orientated fun and its brilliant. The Tossers are not yet as well known as The Dropkick Murphy's or Flogging Molly, but with this album, they are far and away my personal favourites. Can't wait for the next album "The Emerald City" which is released later this year.
