A great Pablo collection.,

This is my second favorite Pablo collection (Original Rockers will always hold the top spot, if only for sentimental reasons) Both of Pressure Sounds' Pablo collections are essential. Amazing range of instrumentals, versions and dubs. If you are a fan of King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown, this is a must own!

This is a fine collection from Pressure Sounds. Unfortunately there are no sound clips here, but if you go to the Pressure Sounds web site you will find some. The magic, mystical spell of Augustus Pablo begins here with the majestic "Far East," featuring an ensemble brass line that is as dynamic and breathtaking as anything on any other Pablo track. Featured are skanky rockers, deep meditative numbers, and even a deejay track by Hugh Mundell. All of these tracks come from 7" and 12" records from the peak of Pablo's career, 1973-1979, and most of them were released in tiny little batches on the island, and were never heard from again until this set came out. One thing to note is that there are SEVEN RHYTHMS used here, so you will hear some rhythms multiple times, with different effects and solos and treatments on top of them. Multiple use of the same rhythm drives some people crazy, so if you are one of those people, be advised. I find that I usually program out some of the versions, opting for the best one or two of the bunch.
Great sound, high quality liner notes and pictures, and really beautiful graphic design add up to a release of very high quality. While "In Fine Style" is not as good as Pressure Sounds' other Pablo release, the stunning masterpiece "El Rocker's," it is still quite good, and worth it for fans of Horace Swaby. If you are new to Augustus Pablo, I would start out with "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown" or "Original Rockers." |
