This album is a huge exception to that general statement.
Konibono
I use to have the vinyl a long long long time ago and a friend reminded me about the album so I bought it!!
Jeanie McInnes
Not quite as an exciting sound as their other album, The Raw and the Cooked, but still good.

I've owned this album since it was released. I was a hard-core 80s pop listener, and a lot of the music I liked back then is now fun for nostalgia purposes but little else. This album is a huge exception to that general statement. It changed the way I looked at pop music, made me appreciate the influence of soul in the UK and just holds up really, really well. Without it I'm not sure I would have found my way to jazz, soul and even country as quickly. Definitely worth a listen every once and a while. I'd say skip "The Raw and the Cooked," too. It's like this stuff with a disco beat.

I have been a FYC fan since the get go. Their music is just so soothing. Roland Gift's voice is great. You can really feel the passion that he puts into it.
The songs are great, in particular, "Johnny Come Home", the cover of "Suspicious Minds"(With Jimmy Sommerville[Bronski Beat/The Communards] assisting on vocals) and "Blue", along with the remixes of "Johnny" and Suspicious Minds".
Definitely one of the better things to come out of the eighties

This debut album by FYC is a true musical triumph. I too have owned this album for more than 10 years and I never tire of listening to it. This album may not have won awards like "The Raw and the Cooked," but, I find it to be the superior album. The album is consistant in its style and provides a coherent listening experience that is missing in "the cooked." This album is a must have for any music lover. This is one of those rare music collections which gets better everytime you listen.

This CD is unquestionably one of the greatest efforts to come out of the 80's. The band's soulful roots make this a timeless classic. You will not be dissapointed. "The Raw and the Cooked", sadly, was a mediocre, at best, follow-up to this masterful work. Roland Gift's many extracurricular activities may have been responsible for for the poor effort. In any event, don't pass up the chance to add this great work to your collection. You will cherise it for years to come.

In a continued effort to ruin the legacy of CDs forever, record companies continue to put together very attractive packages of albums with many tracks never on CD before--then cranking up the volume to near-distortion levels. Get this one for the bonus tracks of reissues of all FYC's big hits, but keep your original CD for the better sound quality. Track list:

Disregard the other review. This CD transcends time and like good Motown music will continue to be played over the years. I've had it for over 10 years and I like it more today than then.

While it seems like this group lived a fairly short life, from the perspective of someone looking back from 2013, this group had incredibly catchy tunes with a very "listen-able" vocalist.

Roland Gift may have one of the gayest singing voices in pop music history, but that's part of what makes his band; Fine Young Cannibals, if you didn't read the album title; stand-out from the rest. With just ten songs in the set, there's not much room for filler, and while the album loses taste near the end, most play along with a fine sense of melodic craftsmanship. The standouts include a salsa jazz ballad entitled Funny How Love Is, about healing the wounds of heartbreak, and Like A Stranger, which would fit perfectly in a broadway musical.
