This book is 316 pages, of which only about 50 are worth reading. This book is a picture book of Spanish wine makers. There are at least 60 full size pictures of winemakers and 40 pictures of vines. There are maybe 2 pictures of the Rioja countryside and 5 pictures of wineries. In other words these big beautiful pictures just take up room.

The author repeats himself constantly! So annoying. They also include 3 other wine regions that have NOTHING to do with Rioja. The Basque region is next to Rioja so that makes sense, but Bierzo and Ribiero Sacra!?! You have to pass 3 wine regions between Rioja and there Beirzo (Ribero del Duero, Rueda, and Toro). And those are actual important regions!

This book offers little to no information to anyone with a Spanish wine knowledge. Buy The New Spain or Wines of Spain (by Jullians $5 used no pictures). They have all the information about the winemakers, along with actual information about Rioja.

About two thirds of the book is devoted to Rioja and the rest is about Navarra, Bierzo, Galicia, Basque Country and Cantabrian Coast. Very current with in depth look at the history, culture, geography, geology, climate, grapes, viticulture, winemaking, top producers, vintages, etc. The book has some excellent photography that will make you feel you were in front of the landscapes or people on the pictures. It also has some great information on restaurants in Spain to find old Riojas and maps of the regions reviewed.

The book was written by Jesús Barquín, Luis Gutiérrez and Víctor de la Serna. Some of the most knowledgeable folks in the Spanish wine world. It would be extremely hard to find folks more qualified to write a book about Spanish wines than these guys. Congratulation to all three on writing this outstanding book.

SALUDos,
José

My husband loves this book. It is informative and never dry. The personalities of the wine growers, the histories of the bodegas and the raw materials of grapes and terroir are all described with care and respect.A really perfect gift for anyone who enjoys the excellent wines of Rioja and wants to know more.

I bought this as I was visiting NW Spain and wine is my living. I found it well presented and even managed to visit some of the wineries written about. It does of course, concentrate on "the Best", which even in Spain are expensive. I found that 2 euro wines (the common price), were more than potable (the opposite is true in France), and that 6 euro wines were very good quality indeed. The single example of the pure varietal of Graciano - was stunning - though a bit more than I needed to pay. But then, once in a lifetime?
