5.0 out of 5 stars Landmark Acoustic Guitar CD, July 15, 2000
This review is from: Fingerstyle Guitar (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after hearing Doyle Dykes perform in less-than-ideal conditions at a Taylor Guitars exhibit at a musictech show in Winnetka, Illinois. Speakers were blaring from every booth, but somehow this guy (who I had never heard of) with the acoustic Taylor was mesmerizing folks who happened to walk by. I have countless acoustic guitar CD's in my collection, and I have to rank this one at or near the top by every measure: the variety and versatility of styles, the impeccable musicianship, the spellbinding cutting-edge technique, the superbly melodic (but never boring) writing, the consistently high quality of the tracks (there's no filler on this CD), the production that focuses on the artist and guitar and eschewing any distracting "enhancements" (like some tracks on Guitarre 2000, his latest CD) the engineering (yes, it's easy to screw up the sound of even a simple acousitic guitar!) -- I could go on and on. From the opening riffs of "Jazz in the Box" you will be hooked, and will be wondering what kind of studio tricks were employed to achieve the kind of melodic effects you're hearing. I can tell you that I've heard nearly every one of these tracks performed live, and they sound every bit as perfect and jaw-dropping as they do on this CD. I could do without some of the evangelical banter in his live performances when I've seen him in person, but hey -- if Doyle really believes that he gets his talent/inspiration from whomever he says he does -- I really can't argue with the results!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best fingerstylist since chet, merle and leo, November 30, 1998
This review is from: Fingerstyle Guitar (Audio CD)
I have been a fingerstyle guitar fan since my musical memory began. The masters such as Merle Travis. Chet Atkins an Leo Kottke have amazed me for many years (46). But I never have been so blown away as when I first heard Doyle's liquid AND dynamic approach to the style. I've as yet to hear anyone match his skill at chimes (some people think it's a harp). And to confirm his skill and spiritual prowness I had the pleasure of working for and meeting his family. The songs that he writes DO come from his heart and I've never met such a happy and friendly family. David Burns

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing technique, passionate playing, great tunes & arr., June 5, 2000
This review is from: Fingerstyle Guitar (Audio CD)
He's a master player, composer and arranger. So many guitar players these days show a lot of flash and/or noodle endlessly. Dykes can blow you away with his technique, but its all in service of the music. He's got something to say, and music is his vehicle. He is a musician's musician, one of the very best.
