In 1990 Finish Line recognized that there was international potential for its bicycle lubricants and the company began exporting to Germany and England. In recent years, Finish Line has focused on teaching cyclists how to choose and use the Finish Line lubricants, cleaners, and cleaning tools that match up best with their bikes, the conditions they ride in, and their personal commitment to bike maintenance.

Finish Line Shop Quality Bicycle Chain Cleaner

The Finish Line Chain Cleaner is designed for quick and efficient chain cleaning--without ever removing your chain. Simply fill the cleaner's reservoir with cleaner and degreaser concentrate (included), clip it onto the chain between the wheel assemblies, and roll the chain through with the Ergo-handle to let the cleaning begin:

  • Three rotating brushes clean inside each chain link.
  • Scrubber pads clean the outside of the chain and wipe the fluid and grime from the chain routing it to the bottom of the cleaner.
  • A powerful, oversized magnet strips away and holds metal filings and other contaminants at the bottom.
  • The 30-degree exit angle and industrial quality foam sponge eliminate dripping and mess.

Used once a month, this cleaner will help maximize your bicycle chain life and create a smoother, more efficient drivetrain overall. Built for shop or home use, the Chain Cleaner features an industrial quality resin body that will not crack when dropped off a work bench. Ready to go out of the box, the Chain Cleaner comes with a 4-ounce bottle of EcoTech Cleaner & Degreaser Concentrate for up to eight separate cleanings and 2-ounces of chain lube.

What's in the Box?

Chain Cleaner unit, one 4-ounce bottle of EcoTech Cleaner & Degreaser Concentrate, one 2-ounce bottle of chain lube.

I bought both the Finish Line and Park chain cleaners at the same time and tried them both. I found both to be effective, but give the edge to the Finish Line for the following reasons:
- better clip
- larger magnet
- easier to hold
That's not to say the Park tool is bad. If I had ordered that one first, I would be happy with it. But when I tried them both, there were small things about the Finish Line that made me like it more.

I had the earlier version of the Finish Line chain cleaner a number of years ago, and this model is much improved. As the instructions indicate, there will be some resistance to turning the cranks with the unit attached, so be sure to test it out with the chain positioned on the second or third smallest rear cog (second worked best for me). The bike should also be in a sturdy workstand or otherwise be held securely.

The cleaning solution works well. Finish Line says use full strength or dilute, I diluted it one part cleaner to three parts water to make a pint of solution, and it worked well. Spin the cranks backwards slowly, holding the cleaner unit firmly with the other hand. I found the detachable handle provided by Finish Line to be very cumbersome, it's better to just hold the cleaning unit with your hand. You can expect some dripping of cleaning solution, so don't try this on your white shag carpeting! After turning the cranks about 20 times snap the unit off and clean and dry the chain with a clean rag. Also clean the cleaning unit by running it under hot water in your sink.

The chain lube is also good, but I've got plenty of Prolink Gold lube, which I think works better. If you haven't used a chain lube before, remember to put it on a CLEAN and DRY chain, and use just ONE DROP on the inner roller of each link. Shake the bottle well first, because the lube is in suspension. After I lube the chain I let it dry again and then run it through a rag again to remove any excess.

Another tip would be to clean the cogs, jockey wheels, and chainrings BEFORE you clean the chain, so you don't pick up the gunk from the cogs and rings the first time you shift through the gears.

So yeah, it's definitely not perfect. It leaks a bit. It's particular to how it needs to be held so as to not derail the chain off the chainrings. And it has some cheap little bristles-on-wheels that will probably have to be replaced ($5-6) after 30-40 uses. But let's face it, it's a ton better than having to remove the chain, put it in a can with kerosene or whatever else you might use, shake it around, let it sit for 20 minutes, dry it off overnight, and then putting the chain back on. The little wheel brushes get in between the rollers and get almost if not all the grit and grime out.

Run your chain through once with degreaser of your choice (finish line's stuff works, but save the money and just use a bottle of simple green and some water to save from the corrosion), follow with water, degreaser, and water once more, (removing the magnet after each change to wash out the reservoir and ensure no residual grit stays behind) and you'll have the cleanest chain you could possibly need.

Granted it might be one iota less clean than the chain-removal-pain-in-the-derriere method but I would imagine that little bit of grit it doesn't get out will probably ruin your chain a single day or two sooner than the removal method does, so really... get over it. Plus it saves you from the mess, the time, and the soul-crushing frustration that comes with pretty much any other method that I've ever heard of. So buy it and stop worrying about it.

One of our mountain bikes had come back from a week-long ride through some pretty dusty terrain. The chain was caked with mud, and we needed a way to clean and lubricate the chain without turning this into an afternoon project. We first sprayed the bike (and chain) off with some water, and then used the Finish Line Line Bicycle Chain Cleaner.

The chain is threaded between 3 circular brushes (its a clever design), you fill up the reservoir with cleaning fluid and pedal backwards through 20 revolutions. When we stopped, the chain was spotless. Total time was 5 minutes. We then used the teflon lubricant directly on the chain with a rag underneath and ran it through the gears. It made a huge difference in noise and pedal smoothness.

A couple notes:

1) Its easier to do this with 2 people, even if you have a bike stand. The tool takes two hands to hold, and you need someone to pedal.

2) It seemed to use 1/2 the cleaning bottle for one chain, so if you have several bikes to do, you may look into buying a larger bottle of the degreaser/cleaner

3) Finish Line makes rebuild kits (with new brushes and pads) available for $8.

If you do a lot of biking, this would be a nice addition to your took chest.

I have 3 bikes, 2 road bikes and a mountain bike and the importance of keeping your chain and drive train clean cannot be overstated. After a few " episodes " of using a rag and toothbrush w/ WD40( not a good idea), I decided to go this rout as opposed to having a removable master link installed. The day I got it I cleaned my best road bikes chain. I used Simple Green as opposed to the fluid that came with it. IT WORKED GREAT !!! I ran the chain through a rag to get off the heavy dirt/grease,filled up to the line with straight Simple Green, gently pushed the top down and latched it(I didnt use the handle, seemed to be to awkward, just wrap your hand around it ) and ran the chain through about 30 revolutions, emptied and refilled again as the chain was kind of dirty.Ran the chain through a rag to get as much of the remaining SG off , then filled it up with clean water and repeated. It is important to remove whatever cleaner you use because if its left on it will dissolve whatever lube you put on. The chain came out VERY VERY clean, especially in between the links and it took maybe 15 min tops. Let it dry and lubed with the lube that came with it, which is decent stuff and the chain has been really quite and shifting very well since. You do have to hang on the unit pretty good when your running the chain through it and figure out the best way to place it so your chain doesnt drop off but its not rocket science, with a little practice and some youtube videos you'll get it figured out.You will get some liquid leaking but thats to be expected, just put a rag under it. The bottom line is, its easy and fast , works VERY well, and will make your chain cleaning/maintenance more regular which is really the KEY.Read more ›
