At my house we are cursed with terrible hard water, and as a result, all of our glasses and dishes look terrible all of the time. Some of our glasses we have even just had to throw out because they looked so disgusting. So we started doing some research on the best possible dishwasher solutions, and found two different articles, one claiming that citric acid was the best thing for cleaning the dishwasher itself, and another that listed power ball as the best detergent to get rid of streaks and white residue. Awesome. So we first got started by buying Citric Acid Powder - Ultra Fine Pure Powdered Crystals - Natural Preservative Food Grade Quality (16 oz), and used that to rinse through the dishwasher maybe three different times. I opened up the lever at the bottom, and where it was once a bit funky looking, it was now really clean. The next test came from the powerball. We then took all of our glassware and ran it through with the powerball. Wow. Just…wow. It worked really well, and took almost all of the white residue and streaks off of the glasses. I then did it a second time, and it was amazing, all of the glasses looked like new. I actually never write reviews for anything, but I’m so (male- four stars) Powerball Dishwasher Detergent

Consumer Reports gave these a second place rating just behind Finish Quantum Tablets, and ahead of Cascade Complete All-in-one Pacs. All three are hard to find where I live. I have used all three. The Quantums clean well, but tend to allow redepositing. The Cascade cleans decently, but leaves cups with a coffee stain. The Powerballs are the best buy, and particularly in this size, they are quite cheap. They resist redepositing, and clean better than the Cascade.

Other information from Consumer Report's ratings (Summer of 2010): Avoid all liquids/gels. As a group, they performed worst. Powders are at best middling performers.

Update: Consumer Reports has an update review in the summer of 2012. If you have hard water the Finish Powerballs are better than the Quantums. The Quantums drop to number 3 in hard water, leaving the Powerballs number 1 by default.

Update 2013: The October Consumer Reports puts Finish Powerball at #2, just behind the rather more expensive Cascade Complete ActionPacs. The Cascade cleans pots better, while the Powerballs do a little better on dishes. With one exception (Cascade Complete Powder), avoid powders and gel detergents. Powerballs are probably the best combination of quality and price out there. If a low price is very important, consider Kirkland Signature Dishwasher Pacs.

I resisted the idea of tablet detergent. Is it ecological (extra packaging for only 32 units, whereas a box of bulk powder detergent would be the same cardboard could conceivably last 100 loads at a Tbs per load.) And it's at least twice as expensive as bulk powder. But there is no doubt these do a better job even than Cascade powder with Dawn, Cascade gel packs or anything else.

These are easy to use; unwrap the tablet, put into the compartment, close door. Run dishwasher. I run with some liquid rinse aid in the rinse dispenser, and I run without heat dry to save energy. My dishes are noticeably cleaner than with Cascade or with Sunlight (which is a budget brand of powder.)

Finish is the old "Electrosol" and similar tabs have been available and dominating the European market for years. Our dishwasher in Germany was energy efficient because there are higher requirements for energy-saving in Europe. These dishwasher tablets were developed to make help wash dishes in very hard water or water high in iron (as ours was.) They are newer to the US, but they are equally useful in areas with hard water, such as our region.

Generally, I would use the cheapest detergent in the dishwasher because the fact is, most of them are similar in composition. Basically, they are sodium bicarbonate, sodium disilicate, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate detergents with sodium citrate for metal brightening and a bleach for decolorizing food stains and sanitation. There may be some proprietary surfactants (rinsing agents) that make one brand better than the other, but in general, you can usually use a budget brand with good, if not great results.

These tablets do not fully desolve in the dishwasher. They leave a white chalky substance on the dishes. I have to run the dishwasher 2 times and still it is not always fully dissolved. My dishwasher is 6 months old and I have not had this issue with any other product.

I bought this brand soley because it was low cost. Big waste of money. I will never buy this product again.
