Book Description

September 24, 1998

The Book of Romans, with its compact yet all-encompassing summary of the Christian faith, has greatly influenced the church through the centuries. Augustine, Martin Luther, and John Wesley all trace their spiritual renewal to a reading of Romans. Great revivals in church history have been sparked by studying it. And the doctrinal truths within Romans are foundational to all of the late Dr. Francis Schaeffer's work.

Now available for the first time ever in print, Schaeffer's landmark commentary on the first eight chapters of Romans—drawn from his recorded talks to a group of students more than three decades ago—provides fresh insight into Schaeffer's thinking and the message of this most remarkable epistle, as well as an arresting perspective on our own times.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dr. Francis Schaeffer was God's gift to a generation of doubters and questioners. The power of his mind and the greater power of God's spirit in him continues to draw thinking men and women, not to religion, but to Jesus Christ." --Cal Thomas, nationally syndicated columnist "This book further establishes Schaeffer as one of the outstanding ministers and expositors of our time. It's a valuable addition to the library of every pastor. " --Pastor D. James Kennedy, founder and director of Coral Ridge Ministries "Francis Schaeffer helped many of us understand the drift of our culture and to think biblically about it. I'm grateful to him for encouraging Christians to know and defend God's unchanging truth in a changing world." --Joanne Kemp, Schaeffer Foundation board member "Francis Schaeffer's books are the reason I have a theology of music today--one that is in harmony with Scripture and that beats with the rhythm of the heart of God." --Charlie Peacock, record producer and author "Francis Schaeffer understood the collision of Christian truth with neo-pagan cultures. His insights are even more valuable today than when they were first expressed." --Pastor R.C. Sproul, founder and director of Ligonier Ministries "Anyone who has ever read one of my novels or heard me speak is benefitting from the influence Dr. Schaeffer has had in my own life and thinking. Now more than ever, his work could prove essential in clarifying the Judeo-Christian worldview to a new generation." --Frank E. Peretti, best-selling fiction author "It was my privilege to know Francis Schaeffer for most of his life as a Christian public servant. I recommend his writings most heartily." --C. Everett Koop, M.D., former U.S. Surgeon General --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clear, cogent, and timely commentary on Romans 1-8., June 16, 2000
This review is from: The Finished Work of Christ: The Truth of Romans 1-8 (Hardcover)
This book comes several years after Dr. Schaeffer's death in 1984 at the age of 72. It was transcribed and from tapes made of Bible studies on Romans 1-8 in the 1960s and edited. The writing is smooth and clear, despite the unorthodox route to publication. They are not scraping the bottom of the barrel for material. This is vintage Schaeffer.

Francis A. Schaeffer is most known as an evangelical apologist, evangelist, and social critic, but he was firmly rooted in Scripture and the historic (and biblical) doctrines of the Reformation: justification by faith, solo scriptura, and the priesthood of all believers. He was also experientially rooted in the life of Christ. For Schaeffer, doctrine should live in the life of the follower of Christ.

I found these studies to be refreshing and encouraging theologically and spiritually. One who is familiar with his other work will find salient Schaefferian themes throughout; but they are never superimposed on the biblical text itself.

Those who desire to understand the Christian gospel and world view should read this book. Those already committed to Christ and his cause should savor this book in order to delve deeply into the transformative truths of the gospel and how it applies to our needy world.

4.0 out of 5 stars This would be a great resource for small group Bible studies, October 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Finished Work of Christ: The Truth of Romans 1-8 (Hardcover)
I've really been enjoying the simple exposition of the Word. This commentary seems to be a good balance between light-and-fluffy and those texts that are plagued with academic fog. Schaeffer's honest and conversational approach really brings the message of Romans to an understandable level.Schaeffer, because of his systematic approach, does tend to over-simplify -- so if you are looking for an indepth word study, this is not the commentary to get. If you are looking for an introduction to Romans or want a refreshing breeze of thoughts from a modern mind, this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great explanation of Romans, September 14, 1999
This review is from: The Finished Work of Christ: The Truth of Romans 1-8 (Hardcover)
Francis A. Schaeffer was one of the foremost philosophical thinkers of this century, a theologian that enfleshed the Christian life and taught many in the faith to use their brains, not to attack and 'debunk' truth, but to use their grey matter to think logically and spiritually, honoring Truth. The author has influenced countless millions, directly and indirectly. His philosophy and thinking was based on the scripture and maybe most of all on the Letter to the Romans from Paul the Apostle. The letter is the main document that links the Old Testament Torah to the revelation of Jesus.
