Book Description

July 2001
Finishing Magic is both a technique and a project book that motivates and challenges readers to create beautiful wood graining and vinegar paint finishes that duplicate exotic woods and antique finishes. Each project is presented with full-color photos and step-by-step instructions to ensure success from the start. The projects also feature tips that will save the reader time and effort and make each step faster and easier to do. The book is divided into two parts. The first covers all of the refinishing and wood graining techniques that readers need to know in order to not only create the projects in the book, but finish any of their own pieces. In part two, utilizing "naked furniture," Bill walks readers step-by-step through 12 projects that include mirror frames, jewelry boxes and tables. With this book, readers will learn how to take a previously built piece of furniture and create convincing "faux" woodgrain patterns to transform it into a gorgeous heirloom that will be treasured forever.

This review is from: Finishing Magic: Dressing Up Naked Furniture with Woodgraining Techniques (Paperback)
Woodworking is my passionate hobby. After a tour of Montecello, I asked the docent if the doors were new or restored-since the finish was relatively fresh compared to the rest of the 200 year old building. He informed me that the finish was a faux woodgrain. I have since been looking for a pictorial refence to learn how it was done. There are many resources for assorted faux finishes. "Finishing Magic" is dedicated to woodgraining exclusively, and just what I needed. While some of the techniques are overly decorative, others will be indespensible. It is easy reading, and the photos are excellent.
