Not Zydeco, February 22, 2009
This review is from: Finisterre (Audio CD)
I really liked the first Zydepunks' album "...and the Streets Will Flow with Whiskey". It was a heady mix of Cajun, Kleizmer, Blues and other styles of world music. Very cool! On this release however, the band has put out an album devoid of any hint of Cajun music. They have instead chosen to do a purely Kleizmer album. That is not really my thing so I give this release three stars.
The thing that made their first album so good was that they could play so many different styles of music, often in the same song. Here, there is only Kleizmer. Maybe the band should change its name? And, as far as Kleizmer goes, there are better bands. Golem is a much better band and so are Gogol Bordello if you want some punk and reggae with your Ashkenazi roots!
Zydepunks have gone from being truly interesting to quite mediocre. No clue whatsoever that this band is from Louisiana. I will make sure I listen to the samples before I purchase another album by this group.

Zydeco punk rock? Heck yes!
As a fan of a multitude of genres and bands, from Queen and the Beatles to The Shins and Flogging Molly, I love this band. Any fan of punk rock could easily take a liking to this album.
