A thorough and comprehensive finite element text that not only covers the finite element theory for structures, CFD, and heat transfer but is also directed towards practical applications. A must for anyone interested in the finite element method, researcher or practicing engineer. This is the only text I have encountered which explains theoretical issues in a manner understandable to an engineer.

The book is keystone for those involved in FEA. It covers all the aspects of Finite Element formulation of physical problems, thought in a more coincise way with respect to , say, Zienkiewicz work and in a less prosaic way. As with many other FE books, the level of mathematics involved in the book is quite high, especially if one considers the non linear finite element formulation for continuum mechanics. Even though the book is mainly intended for structural engineers, it covers fluid dynamics and heat transfer topics. The section I mostly used was the one regarding solution methods for FEM problems: here, Dr Bathe makes a really nice job (about 150 pages). There's a code at the end of the book, it's a FORTRAN 77 one, but one can translate it into a more modern language (I guess we all should get the rid of FORTRAN 77....).

Exercises on non linear FEM tend to be hard, but if you can get the solution book it should't represent a problem.

Two more things: even if the book, as aforementioned, mainly focuses on structural mechanics, there's a common background in FEM problem formulation regardless the particular subject it is intended for.

Second: the book is a very good one, but in my opinion if one intends to study only the basics of FEM, Reddy's book is more suitable for the purpouse. On the other hand, if one intends to pursue a higher level of FEM understanding, this book is a must. This book should be on the shelf of every serious FEM analyst. What's more...I guess Dr. Klaus Jurgen Bathe has to be a very nice person! :-)

Bathe's approach in writing this book makes it a distinguishing one from the "sea" of finite element text books. I personally owns 14 books on finite element method, this book and the other two are the only three I keep on my bookshelf, the rest are really quite garbage and packed up in paper boxes.

This is an excellent text for students and practioners alike. The presentation is brief and to the point and focuses only on algorithms and techniques that have been proven to work. The problems are excellent and can only be solved if one understands the essence of the techniques presented. There are many textbooks on finite elements but none so thought provoking as this one. Definitely a must read!

When it comes the moment for a student, researcher or professional engineer to identify in the immense vastitude of the scientific literature what's the most suitable book that can satisfy his purposes one remains unavoidably stumbled.
I personally spend lot of time in searching the best scientific sources in terms of completeness of the topic, clearness of the exposition and effectivity of the mathematical and physic insights. Furthermore, it is often clear that many of the books in the market often fall short of the ability to enable the reader to make own the tools necessary for making his own analysis, writing his own algorithm and acquire a scientific "mentality".
In the field of the Finite element method among the all books that i came across in the attempt to figure out which one can fulfill the aforementioned qualities i undoubtably found the book "Finite element procedures" of professor Klaus-Jürgen Bathe the best.

For those who have read the articles of professor Bathe like - just to mention one, the work on the subspace iteration method which has been embedded into the most popular commercial softwares like Ansys, Adina and Nastran and is so far used by scientists as the main core for algorithms used in the calculation of frequencies and mode shapes of structures having millions of degrees of freedom - is well known his style of writing and his precious insights.

First of all, the exposition of the topic is easy to follow, coherent, concise and very effective.

This is great book. Quite vigorous in the derivations, no hand waving. I taught myself nonlinear FEA from this book. I'd say it's more graduate level though.
