College book for finite mathematics,
By trash80 (central U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Finite Math with Applications (9th Edition) (Hardcover)
This is one of the worst math books I have ever had the pleasure of using.
I usually always make A's in mathematics, and am also in Honors, but this book is a fight to understand. The answers in the back are wrong very often, about 1-3 times per exercise. There are about 4-7 exercises per chapter @ 10 chapters. This is extremely frustrating when learning new facets of mathematics. This book is being used at University I am attending, and is not worth this level of education. The instruction in the book is very confusing, by jumping from idea to idea with no flow. First the errors have to be filtered out before any learning can be done. The course I am taking is an online course, so without a live instructor to give the correct information, one leaves completely confused. I have emailed my professor at least once per chapter to confirm my correct answer against the wrong answer in the book. Or the answer key may have extra answers i.e. problem 11 may have questions a, b, and c, and the key will have answers for a, b, c, d, and e. TO ANY EDUCATOR LOOKING TO USE THIS BOOK FOR THE CLASSROOM, PLEASE CONSIDER ANOTHER RESOURCE, THIS BOOK IS OF VERY POOR QUALITY. Pearson should be ashamed to allow such bad editing to make it to consumers. This is the 9th (Ninth) edition printed in 2007. Math does not change enough to have such bad errors. Nor should any book be so jumbled.

I agree with Scott - this is the worst math book I've ever had to purchase. I actually had to go to the library and check out other books to get an idea of the topics that were discussed in THIS book. If you need this book for a class I suggest you do like I did and go to the library too so that you can pass because this book certainly won't help you in that aspect.

I bought this book so I could get ready for school in two months. I found the book to be very helpful. The problems and the explanation on how to solve them were explained step by step. I defenately recommend it. Victor

I teach community college mathematics courses. When the publisher sent me a review copy of this textbook as the new edition to replace the "old" (Lial, Greenwell, Ritchey, 8th edition), I told him we will continue with the old.
With respect and fairness to the authors, Lial co-wrote (see above - originally with the late Miller) the excellent text on finite mathematics we currently use. Hungerford co-wrote (with Mercer - 1991) one of the best trigonometry texts I've seen. I might be wrong but have a feeling the publisher's marketing department had a little too much to say about how this book was put together. Unfortunately this kind of nonsense is what passes for "leadership" and "innovation" today in business, government and education.

Terrible math book,

I was unfortunate enough to have this math book selected by my college for my math course. It was very unclear in its examples of how problems were figured out, and in its instructions. I would never use this book again for any math course. I thought it was the worst math book I ever used. It made the course much more difficult than it needed to be. Don't buy this book, I am sure that there are better ones on the market. But, if your school selects it for your course you had better have a better quality supplementary math book to use or you won't do well in your course.

Well, the book was for school... The one I needed. It came in good condition for just $4. No marks, bends, tears, etc. It also arrived very fast. Then again I do use the student prime advantage ;). Thumbs up to the seller. That is all.

For starters I payed extra to have my book delivered by a certain day so I would have it for my 6:30 pm class. It did not arrive until after 7 pm that day. In the description of the book, it was described as new. The book was obviously used. The spine was quite flemsy. The book had scratches on it. There was no writing on the inside of the book and the pages did not look used. It was just the fact that I thought I was getting a "brand new" book, not a "like new" book. There were "like new" books available at a lower cost if that was what I was looking for.

Even though I couldn't use the code for the online portion for the math course I'm taking, this is still a great deal. It definitely helped in terms of paying off my school books as well as fees and tuition for classes. I'd definitely would recommend this seller!
