Editorial Reviews

Review

"I love the Question and Answer paragraphs. They pinpoint key ideas and offer clear explanations of why things are done in a particular way. Moreover, as a teaching tool, the instructor can emphasize to the students that these are the types of questions they should ask themselves whenever they are reading or listening to any mathematical presentation. If they can't come up with the answers themselves, it is an indication they need more work or need to get help from their instructor."

"I thought Finite Mathematics was innovative in many respects and I liked some of the innovations enough that I will permanently adopt them as part of my approach to teaching this course." "The greatest strength of this book is the realistic nature of examples and exercises. Obviously the authors went to a lot of effort to create these! I also think the students appreciate these books that make an earnest effort to communicate with them in a way they will find useful." "I think the idea of making Excel central to the course is the correct approach for a business oriented mathematics course."

"The Question-and-Answer segments add to the readability of the text and help bring it alive for the students. They probably don't think of questions as they read, so providing some questions further enhances the value of the book."

"I have been using Waner/Costenoble for several years now and have enjoyed their use of humor and useful application exercises…Their integration of real world problems helps answer students' questions of 'When am I ever going to use this?' Rare is such a question when using this book." "The addition of Excel is a great tool for those using computers in their courses." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Stefan Waner and Steven R. Costenoble both received their Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, having studied several years apart with the same advisor, J. Peter May. Their paths merged when Steven joined Stefan at Hofstra University in 1987; since then they have coauthored 15 research papers in algebraic topology. By the early 1990s they had become dissatisfied with many of the Finite Mathematics and Applied Calculus textbooks. They wanted textbooks that were more readable and relevant to students' interests, containing examples and exercises that were interesting, and reflected the interactive approaches and techniques they found worked well with their own students. It therefore seemed natural to extend their research collaboration to a joint textbook writing project that expressed these ideals. To this day they continue to work together on their textbook projects, their research in algebraic topology, and their teaching. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Infinite Mistakes, November 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Finite Mathematics (Hardcover)
What can I say...as a student I am not impressed with this book at all. It is full of mistakes. How are students supposed to correctly learn the material if their texts are full of mistakes?

I especially recommend that you steer away from buying the solutions manual. The text's solution guide does not even match the manual.

I would love to sit and list all of the mistakes, but frankly it would take me an infinite amount of time.

The book also includes free access to [a website], which inconveniently does not list the mistakes in the book. I would give the authors more credit for their book if they would put their mistakes on the website instead of forcing students to wade through murky waters.

4.0 out of 5 stars really good math book, June 15, 2005
By
I don't know why someone said this book is full of mistakes. I really studied through the whole book and couldn't find a single mistake. I am an international student from germany and so english is my second language. This book explains problems step by step and has a lot of exercises with anser keys in the back for all odd problems as well as a review test for each single chapter. I also really like this book, since my math instructor doesn't know how to explain things, so I had to read this book in and out. It is good for self study.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ease of Use, January 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Finite Mathematics (Hardcover)
Math books are not fun reading, this book isn't an exception. But, it is extremely easy to use. The examples and lessons are laid out in great detail, and the actual questions are relevant to today's society. Gone are the monotonous questions of trains and what time they are leaving the station. These boring problems are replaced by ones themed around iPods and Xbox. The answers conveniently placed in the back of the book are easy to navigate and make this book better than the teacher. For my college math 120 class this book allows me a guaranteed A
