Editorial Reviews

Review

Presenting the very best examples of these utopian retreats, this book is an inspiration for anyone dreaming about a summer home of their own. -- Belle Magazine, April 2008

Review

Amid rocky outcrops and thickets of knotty conifers, this charming collection of Finnish houses, rustic, unpolished and fabulously authentic, is an arresting change from the glossy houses that inhabit most architectural publications.

How wonderful to see these 20 simple summer houses, designed by Finnish architects (including six women) for themselves, friends, and their families, between 1895–2003. The house lines are clear; the materials are humble. Though the Finns call their summer cottages "villas", there are no imitation Tuscan villas here--just beauty, function, and lots of light. The book has 191 color photos, scores of elevation sketches, tiny floor plans, a select bibliography, and lists and photos of other more famous works by these architects. Yes, the roll call goes from Aalto to Saarinen, Siren, and all in between. I browse this book every year and enjoy the reminder that one can build a house just to shelter loved ones and enjoy nature. Without meaning to be ostentatious, these Finns have created stunning homes.
