Book Description

October 1, 2006
Fire with Fire is an action-packed international thriller ripped from today’s headlines. When billionaire Jake Burke’s wife and daughter are slain in a terrorist attack on U.S. soil, he uses the wealth and connections at his disposal to track down their killers. Along the way he encounters STOP: a rogue organization of former intelligence agencies from around the world dedicated to ending terrorism by any means necessary—unhindered by the usual government restraint. Backed by extensive research, businessman/author Allan Kahane takes Jake (and the reader) on a quest which explores in depth the issues that arise when violence ricochets off violence.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this effective revenge thriller, multimillionaire Jake Burke, a hedge-fund manager, becomes the latest vengeful survivor of Islamic terror when a suicide bombing in New York's FAO Schwartz claims his wife and daughter. After improbably getting access to sensitive NYPD investigative files, Burke, assisted by his de rigeur efficient, sexy and devoted young assistant, Miranda, tracks down the terrorist's accomplice in Egypt and kills him, inadvertently derailing the official investigation into the bomber's paymasters. Burke is soon recruited by a shadowy international brotherhood of ex-spies convinced that Iran is on the verge of waging terror with nuclear arms, and becomes their partner and a prime source of funds. Burke and Miranda's covert missions and narrow escapes are thrilling, if implausible, and Kahane often resorts to didactic language in an effort to persuade the reader of the implications of a nuclear Iran, though in the current political climate few readers could be unaware of the stakes. Still, for genre fans with a hefty suspension of disbelief, Kahane's debut provides plenty of hot-button action.

More About the Author

Allan Kahane's global travels have made him a first-hand witness to the nearly universal negative perception of the U.S. in the developing world--with increasingly dangerous implications for American security. Grave doubts about our country's ability to counteract this growing threat led him to write Fire with Fire to provoke readers to share his concerns'before it's too late.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't you wish ..., December 5, 2006
By
This review is from: Fire with Fire (Hardcover)
First of all: I liked the book. The concept is a tad naive, but rewarding in itself. Don't we all wish there were an organization to deal back to the terrorists a dose of their own medicine?
Of course such organizations do exist, and have existed in the past. Of many we know only for their fiascoes. Anyone remember the bomb in the Rainbow warrior in New Zealand? The triple A in Argentina?
Problem with the concept is, of course, that such organizations have to operate outside the limits of law and outside the concepts of good and evil that we all (except for the terrorists) take for granted; eventually, horrible crimes, difering only in magnitude from the terrorist's are committed. How do you avoid that? Adroitly, Kahane injects a moral brake in the anti-terror organization, and succeeds in leaving us with a feel-good happy ending. I only give this 4 stars, because it is precisely in that happy ending, where I feel my momentary suspension of disbelief ends.
It is however a satisfying read.
Dont you wish ...
In this book, Kahane adroitly

5.0 out of 5 stars A shocking novel of violence and cruel choices in a bloody underground war., December 9, 2006
This review is from: Fire with Fire (Hardcover)
Written by global traveler Allan Kahne, who has experienced firsthand the increasingly negative perception of America by the world at large, Fire With Fire is gripping novel of revenge and suspense. When Jake Burke's wife and daughter are slain in a terrorist attack on U.S. soil, he devotes his personal wealth to track down and execute the lone surviving bomber in Egypt. In the process, Jake and his assistant Miranda are swept into an operation run by rogue intelligence agents who dare to combat terrorism with tactics the government cannot use - fighting fire with fire. Though fictional, Fire With Fire draws heavily upon real people and real situations to present a chillingly believable threat, from suitcase nuclear bombs (eighty-four of which are currently still unaccounted for) to the past and present realities of Egypt, Israel, and Iran. A shocking novel of violence and cruel choices in a bloody underground war.
