I caught "Firebirds" in the theater during my first annual training with the National Guard after a 3 year Active Duty hitch. We were at Corpus Christi Army Depot doing what? Working on helicopters, natch. About 6 of us piled into a taxi and rode downtown to the el-cheapo theater for 90 minutes of cheesy salutes, whacky dialog, goofy actors and some pretty darn good Apache flying.

Is it accurate? No. Ask any Navy F-14 pilot how he felt in 1986 about Tom Cruise's adaptation of reality and he'll say the same thing that a lot of the Army Aviation folks have already said about Firebirds. That's because in Hollywood, in general, if "accuracy" or "correctness" gets in the way of "story," story generally wins out. (The obvious mold-breaker here being "Band of Brothers", but that had more to do with the original story being highly accurate) Heck, Top Gun's technical advisor says he stil has a hard time showing his face at F-14 reunions. But he learned quickly that while some of the things they show in a movie might not be accurate to the people who do it day in and day out, its still a movie and they have to make it look stylish or whatever. How exciting would watching an Apache crew go over their 10-20 minute long startup procedure really be? No, they hop in the aircraft, flip a couple switches, throw their brain buckets on, suddenly the rotor blades are at flight RPM and off they go. I know that's not reality, but I'm not watching this movie for reality.

With Firebirds, sometimes you just have to put your brain in neutral and enjoy Sean Young in a flight suit that is 3 sizes too small, Tommy Lee Jones going "full-tilt boogie for freedom and justice," and Nicholas Cage laying out droll one-liners for a paycheck.

Yes it's corny but it is really a great movie! From Tommy Lee Jones' portrayal of a John Wayne character to Nicholas Cage's corny hero, finally coupled with the sexiest role I've seen Sean Young in..its a fun movie. Don't expect an artistically significant movie, have fun instead. I love it!

I loved this movie when it was aired on TV in the UK as "Wings of the Apache". I watched it "by accident" and thought hey, this looks cool... Nicholas Cage & Tommy Lee Jones make a great screnn partnership and there's no pretence or over-the-top Hollywood feel to this like movies such as Top Gun- simple story, amusing scenes, good action... a great recipe for an entertaining 2 hours if you just want to relax and not hurt your brain. I think if you've enjoyed the likes of Airwolf & Blue Thunder then you'll find this a charming surprise. And at this price, you can't go wrong! Come on October!!!

FIRE BIRDS (1990) Directed by David Green.

Starring Nicholas Cage, Sean Young, Marshall Teague(of BABYLON 5 fame) and Tommy Lee Jones.

Set in 1989 in the wake of President George Bush Srs declaration of the war on the South American drug cartels, the film tells of the formation of an Apache helicopter squadron, its training and initiation into combat against the formidable Cuban supplied air power of the Cartels--particularly a deadly Scorpion helicopter pilot trained in North Korea.

Something of a helicopter version of TOP GUN except that this film is actually about something important---the war against the Cartels. There are also interesting subplots about women in the military and a former helicopter ace dealing with the fact that he is now 44 and therefore an old man.

The film suffers from some unfortunate 80s style hip/macho dialogue and Cages helicopter ace character is inconsistent going from serious and driven to arrogant and irritating with little justification. One suspects he was pressured to act like Cruise in TOP GUN and ends up too often looking like a jerk rather than the American hero he is. One does not understand just why Phil Collins songs seem to be in every damn 80s film ever made but here we are again and it is brutal. Sean Young is very fetching and gives a good intriguing performance as a woman who wants to fly for her country rather than stay at home and be a wife. She is, however, stuck with the films worst line when, about to blow up a bad guy, says Snort this. Jones is very good both as the tough as nails trainer of fighting men and as a man confronting his age.

I must say that I disagree with Mr. Maltin's review of this movie. Although it is not well known, it has everything popular action movies have and more, including a great cast (Cage, Jones and Young). The arial combat scenes are intense, and the competition and trainingg of the pilots is very similar to Top Gun. One of the differences is that Young is actually involved in the action instead of sitting on the sidelines "consulting" ala Kelly MicGillis. To sum things up, this is a great movie and I recomend to anyone who is a fan of the actors or the genre.

Fire Birds showcases some good actors in roles that fit them well. The character of Jake is classic Nicholas Cage and Tommy Lee Jones shows his usual wit and unique style. The action is great, showing some of the best helicopter air battles in any movie. It was a good film to make as there are plenty that showcase fighter planes, but very few with helicopters. I would recommend Fire Birds to anyone who enjoys either Nicholas Cage, Tommy Lee Jones, Helicopters or just good military based action. It also doesn't hurt that Sean Young portrays a very nice looking pilot herself.
