Book Description

FOUR STARS! Romantic Times

On the order of King William II, called Rufus, Alain De Crency goes to Cumbria to seize the castle of the sorcerer Fyren, kill him, and take Fyren's daughter as his bride- no questions asked.

But no siege or battle is necessary, for the castle is merely handed over to him. And inside he finds the evil Fyren dead, his body shrouded in the most magnificent purple cloak Alain has ever seen. Alain takes the cloak for his own, then discovers the intended bride is missing. He wonders, does the girl, as he had asked Rufus, have two heads? And what secrets will he find that Rufus didn't want to tell him?

Tormented by demons and hideous dreams, Melisande cares not whether she lives or dies, yet she fears death far more than dying. She has committed a sin that will never be forgiven, killed her murderous father to protect her people from his predations. But Fyren is said to be the Spawn of Satan, and Melisande has every reason to believe his claims. And once she crosses into the realms of Satan, she knows her father will exact vengeance beyond her worst imagination. The hellish voices that scream inside her head now are nothing compared to what is to come. Yet she knows the Norman priests will burn her for her crimes as well as her demons.

She flees, hoping the Norman lord will be satisfied with just the castle. But Fyren has sealed the fate of the Norman, for the purple cloak she left as Fyren's shroud is now draped over the Norman's shoulders. Only Melisande knows what it will bring. Only she can save the Norman from his fate, and the fate of her people with him. That means she must face death. And Hell. And Fyren.

Review

5 STARS "This captivating novel, set in the Middle Ages in England is a combination of love, darkness, suspense and magic interwoven smoothly by the author. I was transported into another time and place and held there until the very last page. I found FIRE DANCE to be an excellent read. It deserves 5 spectacular stars!" About the Author

A native of Illinois, Delle Jacobs has been crafting stories since the tender age of four. She earned a degree in geography from the University of Oklahoma and worked as a cartographer until eventually becoming a social worker specializing in troubled teens and families. Everything changed, however, once she began writing books in 1993, and by 2004, literary success convinced her to quit her day job and focus full time on writing. She is a seven-time finalist for the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart Award, which she has won an unprecedented three times, in addition to numerous other writing awards for her novels, including His Majesty, the Prince of Toads, Lady Wicked, Sins of the Heart, and Aphrodite’s Brew. Along the way she discovered a knack for designing e-book covers, which is a great way to get her creative juices flowing when her book characters are being particularly uncooperative. She lives today in southwest Washington State with her family.

4.0 out of 5 stars A romance with a purpose October 30, 2010

Somewhere in what will become England, 1092, Alain de Crecy, a normand, is mandated by his king (Rufus) to kill the evil magician Fyren, storm his castle and marry Melisande, Fyren's daughter, no matter what.
Melisande, a tormented soul, has other plans...
This is more than just two people falling in love. This book has well drawn characters, an actual plot and touches on pretty deep issues. I enjoyed the spark of scientific knowledge in the mist of medieval time. The author's treatment of ancien mysteries sounded true to the time period, even if, in Mrs Jacobs own words, modern romance has little to do with real medieval practices.
Overall, a satisfying historical romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good romance, entertaining story October 6, 2010
By Lisa
Format:Kindle Edition
I gave this book a go because it was free and I'm glad I did. Not only were the main characters, Alain and Melisande, well developed and relatable, so were the supporting characters. I found myself hoping for spin off novels for some of the other characters, such as Cretian. Even though the story followed a standard romance formula it was not boring or totally predictable at all. And the twist was truly unexpected. I will definitely be looking up other books by this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars intense October 15, 2011
By Emily

I bought this book for 99 cents after reading Delle Jacobs's "Loki's Daughters" for free, which is one of the best romance novels I've read recently. That book was focused around a tempestuous love connection, and the characters had troubled history, but not remotely as troubled as Melisande in this book.

I would warn future readers that it was quite upsetting at times-- there could be sexual trauma triggers for some. I don't want to spoil the plot, but it did get *very* intense, like beyond what I could have expected because it was relatively innocent at first. I couldn't put the book down, not because I didn't want to, but because I needed to keep reading to find a place with a tiny bit more resolution to pause for the night.

The demons in Melisande's head were sort of confusing at first, but I wanted to trust that everything would work out because I liked Jacobs's earlier book so much. The psychology of Melisande got much more developed and intense, I know some other reviewers said they didn't buy it, but if you read until the last 15-20% (this is how I measure the length of books with the kindle now lol), it gets very vivid and you can put the pieces together.

There were a few sections I had to click forward a couple pages because they were a bit heavy on battle plans, but it was paced generally okay. The romance was quite good, but I felt like the major drama started to reveal & unravel shortly after the romance got going, and then the romance never quite picked up again. And let's be honest, that is my favorite element.

The book was good, but I honestly liked "Loki's Daughters" a lot more. It had that sort of classic "love that cannot be" plot, but was not quite as formulaic as most romance novels, which I really loved about it. It had a charismatic and very strong female lead character, was vivid, well-paced, pretty sexy, with great supporting characters, and the setting and time period were not the usual romance novel settings. It was full of exciting events and a battle or two, but the events were not as all-consuming as with "Fire Dance," which was just too intense and not as fluid for me. For 99 cents though, this is still a good buy.

More About the Author

I like to say I live in a fantasy world of endless green forests, cascading silvery rivers that run between shining, snow-capped mountains, and within reach of both a high desert scabland and a sandy-beached, marine blue ocean. It's called Washington State. I share this wonderland with two to three generations of adult males (more or less, depending on time and circumstances), the requisite two writer's cats of mixed heritage and contradicting dispositions, and all sorts of other mossy-backed folk who don't mind the rain that makes our land so magical. I love to fill my historical and fantasy romance with this same feeling of magic.

I'm a three time winner of the Golden Heart and have won many other awards for my books. I have been involved in e-publishing almost from the industry's beginning. Besides writing, my other favorite addiction is designing covers for ebooks.

Now, it's true, my life doesn't always seem all that rich in fantasy and beauty. But every word of it is true. I might have dressed it up a bit for the introductions, but since that's the way I like it, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks again to all of you who have taken the time to read, review and appreciate my books, both publicly and in personal notes. I love hearing from fans, so if you're of a mind to drop me a line, please don't hesitate.
