5.0 out of 5 stars Lessons forgotten or never taught
I found this book very informative, ignore Safety-Command's review. I attended David Dodson's 16 hour class during the FDIC conference in Indianapolis in 2005. The class was an overview of the book and the more important skill of learning to read smoke. Mr. Dodson also taught an Art of Reading Smoke class that was attended by over 1,000 people. 1.0 out of 5 stars A disservice to fire fighters
The lessons presented by Dodson are grossly oversimplified and the book is an injustice to fire fighters who use it. In addition, it is only written to an eighth grade level. Save your money and maybe your life.

This review is from: Fire Department Incident Safety Officer (Paperback)
I found this book very informative, ignore Safety-Command's review. I attended David Dodson's 16 hour class during the FDIC conference in Indianapolis in 2005. The class was an overview of the book and the more important skill of learning to read smoke. Mr. Dodson also taught an Art of Reading Smoke class that was attended by over 1,000 people. This book is the basis for the FDSOA certification test. It is a must read for any Department who has not established procedures for implementing a scene safety officer. Read and learn. The book is simplified to better understand and function in the role of a Safety Officer.

I purchased two Fire Department Incident Safety officers manual for myself and a friend. When reading the manual I found that both books had several chapters missing. When I contacted Amazon they quickly sent me new manuals with no charge and pre-paid return labels to cover the return of the defective manuals. Even though there was an initial problem, I am very pleased with the service I received.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great ISO Reference, October 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Dodson gives a great overview into the Incident Safety Officer (ISO) role, safety concepts and how to design an ISO system. He also summarizes how to read smoke, buildings, situational risk, and hazard calls, as well as firefighters (when it's time for rehab, stressors to consider, etc.). Finally, he covers ISO duties at structure and wildland fires, HazMat and technical rescue incidents, post incident responsibilities, and how the ISO position fits into the Incident Command System.

The appendix comes with sample ISO SOPs covering incident actions, ISO selection and training, checklists for resource evaluation, recon and report/planning.

This book is just under 350 pages, which is short compared to other fire service books I've read. I was expecting a larger book, given the importance of having a safety officer on-scene and the amount of duties the job entails. That being said, Dodson packs a lot of information into these pages.

If a fire department is interested in creating an ISO position or if someone wants to learn more about what ISOs do, this would be the book to start with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for all Officers and aspiring Officers, February 4, 2011
This is a must read for ALL Officers. He takes a practical approch to Safety that is easy to understand. I will be passing this around to other Officers to read. If you are an officer or aspire to become one, I HIGHLY recommend this book! There is a lot that can be learned from Chief Dodson.
