5.0 out of 5 stars On Fire by Drew Zachary, July 19, 2007
This review is from: On Fire (Paperback)
Sam is a 18 years old student with a passion for uniform... and when he sees Robert, a 6 feet and half fireman, all wet in his uniform, his "wet" dreams come true. But Robert is 32 years old and, even if the first encounter is a steamy sex session, he thinks that a boy so young can't stay long in a relationship. But if they want to take a change, maybe this will be the best love of their life.

Sam, Sammy, is a wonderful character: a wild cat in bed and a tender puppy outside. He absolutely loves sex, more and often. Without problems and strings attached. But Robert is something else. He can't be only a one night stands.

Robert is the type of man I like best: a huge man outside with a sweet inside; he wants commitment, he wants love forever...

On fire is a sexy romance filled with funny moments. There is a lot of sex, but it is a joyouse and simple sex, an old way sex... with all the stuff you can read in this days, get excited with it means that Drew Zachary has a happy pen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful and delicious!, March 10, 2007

There is nothing deep about the plot but there is a delightful playfulness in this sexy story which makes it such an enjoyable read. Sam is 18 while his hot hunky fireman is 32. Yet age is never a problem in their relationship as they love, have constant sex and build a life together. The few scenes with Sam's protective yet supportive father is quite engaging.
Incidentally Drew Zachary is the pen name for the collaboration of Chris Owen and Vic Winters. Chris needs no introduction for those of us into M/M. As for Vic Winters, I love the ones I read from Torquere Press though so far they are all short stories. On Fire is a wonderful collaboration indeed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, March 8, 2007
This review is from: On Fire (Paperback)
The sex in this book could singe the page! It's frequent without being repetitive, especially with Sam-the-Energizer Bunny. This is a great example of erotica that is also romance. In between the steamy scenes, we have two men trying to deal with what was supposed to be a one night stand becoming much more. Robert isn't that much younger than Sam's father, and Sam has never been in a committed relationship before. There friends don't exactly move in the same social circles (Sam isn't even old enough to drink!). They fumble their way around these obstacles, of course, giving readers the prerequisite "happily ever after", but without having an utterly predictable ending. Highly recommended!

This is Drew Zachary's first print title from Torquere, and I can only hope there will be more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot read!, November 12, 2008
This review is from: On Fire (Paperback)
This starts, I imagine, how more than one relationship might truly start. Less about the hearts and flowers and more about basic, animal attraction.

Robert is a smokin hot fire fighter who has been burned before in a relationship. Enough to make him very wary of Sam. He is unwilling, initially, to take their relationship beyond anything sexual and making himself vulnerable to another person.
Sam is just such a piece of fluff. But I kinda liked him for all that and thought he was ballsy and proud of who he was. He reminded me of Lysander in Jilly Cooper's gorgeous book, The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous. Both Lysander and Sam had a particularly endearing flaw.

Sam often seems over the place but does begin to have serious feelings for Robert. I did find this a little difficult to take as he is only 18, nearly 19 when they 1st start the hot nekkid man love, of which there is MUCH! I kept thinking about many relationships at 18 that start and finish rather smartly and wondered if most blokes at this age really do want to settle down. Am I being too cynical? Robert being that much older, and smokin, makes for interesting plot and much, much, much smexy stuff. Energizer bunny stuff, srsly Sam puts that pink bunny to shame!

A good read for a night with rain on the roof.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great modern day romance, June 14, 2008
This review is from: On Fire (Paperback)
A quickie turns into true romance in this story of a college student, Sam, and a firefighter, Robert, who is closer to the kid's father's age than to him. Which is something Sam's father points out when he meets his son's new boyfriend for the first time.

So how can two completely different people have a life together? Read this book and find out. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I'm so glad the author continues the story, picking up several years later after Sam is out of school and working. Are they still together? Read the second book and find out!

4.0 out of 5 stars ON FIRE by Drew Zachary, April 14, 2008
This review is from: On Fire (Paperback)
A cute college student picks up a sexy older fireman at a Canada Day car
wash for a quick fling, and a sweet relationship develops.

This book is really sweet, and the sex is *HOT*. The pairing between a mature fireman and a flamboyant college boy isn't one I would have picked if I'd been warned ahead of time, but the chemistry works here.

The kid is hyperactive and silly and I wish he'd been a bit more mature, but he didn't bother me as much as I thought he would. The fireman, however, is the very image of "strong and sexy", and his calm demeanor really balances out the kid's craziness. There's no major external conflict in this story besides the social issues that might surround a relationship with such a big age difference. This is just good fluff. Think of it as really sexy cotton candy. :)

I liked ON FIRE even better when I found out that my favorite Torquere author Chris Owen makes up half of the "Drew Zachary" pen name.

There is ALOT ALOT of sex in this book, with a SMALL storyline, but the way the author portrays it and makes it flow makes it a very cute, sizzling and enjoyable read!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad...But Not Great, February 23, 2008
This review is from: On Fire (Paperback)
Robert is a 32 year old Fireman who is openly gay and is mostly content with life. Sam is an 18 year old college guy who is bubbly, bouncy, and always looking for fun. When Sam picks Robert up at a Canada Day festival it's supposed to be just a one night stand but neither guy can quite forget the other. A couple months later when Roberts calls Sam with an invite to dinner their relationship takes off. Dealing with Sam's disapproving father(age difference) and Roberts confused friends(Sam's hair keeps changing colors)the two try to make love connect their many differences.
I had several hang ups about this book. The age difference bothered me. If Sam was just a couple years older I wouldn't have thought nothing of it, but 18? And he wasn't a mature 18 either. He annoyed me about as much as my 18 year old niece does, and I would be pissed if some 32 year old man(or woman) messed around with her. That's too young for 30something. Another problem was the author seemed to base the entire story around sex. For some that might not be a bad thing and normally not a promblem for me, but this went overboard in the repetitiveness. Not to mention pushing the reality boundaries considering Sam could seem to come like 5 time a lovemaking session, and have several sessions a day. That's a guy I'd like to meet! To be honest I grew bored with the book. The constant sex is fine if there's plot and conflict going on around it. Like Bareback by Chris Owen. That was great! This left me wondering what the point was. But hey, different people different opinions. Other reviewers seemed to like it. Try for yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Full of sex with no plot, but the romance is sweet, May 12, 2009
This review is from: On Fire (Paperback)
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.
Disclaimer: I prefer romances that are more about feelings than sex. If a book has lots of lust-filled, dispassionate sex, I'm not impressed. If the sex is a manifestation of love, bring it on.

Rating: 7/10

Pros:
- Lots of sex, but it gets emotional pretty quickly, so the last half of the book (at least) I really enjoyed. (see cons list below also)
- Realistic portrayal of the gradual emotional attachment that develops between two people in a normal "just sex at first but love later" relationship.
- Appealing characters. Rob is sensitive and sexy, and Sam is bouncy and frenetic. (Honestly, though, I've read the book twice now, and I don't remember liking Sam as much the first time I read it. I find him very endearing after two reads.)

Cons:
- Not much plot. This is a book about romance and not much else, but I didn't find it as engaging as some other strictly-romance books I've read (Caught Running by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux, for example).
- Because of the "not much plot" thing...it has lots of sex. Lots. And it gets a little repetitive, though not as badly as in some other m/m novels I've read. The main thing about the sex is that I just can't make myself believe that there's any man out there--18 years old or not--who can go off as fast (and often) as Sam does and still recover so quickly.

Overall comments: Read it if you're looking for a slight romance and/or a lot of sex, most of it sweet and heartfelt. Avoid it if you're looking for anything with a plot or for a romance full of angst and secret yearning. There's not a lot of conflict here.

A quick read, especially if you skim over the many, many, many sex parts. I liked the character Robert, and couldn't quite connect with the teenage one (and why if he didn't want to emphasize the age difference did Robert keep calling Sam "Sammy?") Like Sam's father I couldn't see they had much going except for the many, many, many sex episodes.
