5.0 out of 5 stars Best Christian book I've ever read, December 9, 1999

This review is from: Fire of Gods Love: (Paperback)
If God has a call on your life this book is a must read. The Fire of God's Love brings revelation of the Love of God and the Ways of God with fresh insight. Sections are entitled: Furnace of Love, The Cross, Motivations of the Heart, Friendship with God, The Song of Solomon, and The Greatest is Love. I've studied and read in each of these areas seperately, but never before found these vital truths wound together in such a life-giving way. The author, Bob Sorge, is sharing spiritual revelations that will hit your spirit and change your life, because his life has been changed through the Fire of God's Love. You won't regret getting a copy of this book, it will be some of the best money you've ever invested.

Bob Sorge has done it again! He's written yet another fantastic book. I first became acquainted with the works of this fine author while browsing on Amazon one day, and quite by accident(no...more like divine providence), I came across "Secrets of the Secret Place," a book that changed my life. I was so impressed after reading "Secrets of the Secret Place" that I sought other books by Bob Sorge and discovered "The Fire of God's Love." I was tremendously blessed by this reading experience. It offers fresh revelatory insight into the dynamics of being a servant to God, friendship with God, and intimacy with Him. In today's humanistic society, sometimes Christians can be seduced by "another gospel" that purports a guarantee from God of a care-free life loaded with unimaginable material abundance, divine health, and the absence of suffering. However, in "The Fire of God's Love," Sorge makes it clear through the Scriptures that suffering for the Christian is unavoidable in this hostile world. He gives compelling reasons for our suffering:

1. it brings us to a greater level of spiritual maturity
2. it burns off impurities in our flesh, clearing the way for us to walk in the Spirit
3. it brings us into greater fellowship with Jesus
4. it reveals a deeper dimension of God's love
5. it is the only way that we can identify and partner with Christ's suffering

We're reminded that God's ways are not our ways, He's still sovereign, and there is a divine purpose for our pain. For it is out of our pain that we give birth to great spiritual blessings that not only draw us closer to the Father's bosom, but also have eternal value. Chapter 28 entitled, "The Ultimate Pinnacle," gives the reader a fresh look at a familiar passage of scripture, Romans 8:28-39. Of course, we've heard the Christian "mantra" time and time again that we are more than conquerors, however Sorge illuminates this scripture in context. He points out that even though the rigors of life (tribulations, distress, persecutions, poverty, etc.) have left us weak, broken and hurting, we can still wave our victory banner because although it looks like we're losing, we still win. The fact that we have God's magnificent love sustaining us makes us winners.

If we can express our love toward God in the midst of our pain, even when we don't understand His movement in our lives; if we can suffer without complaining, and still remain in hot pursuit of God; if we can worship Him in the midst of a crisis realizing that He uses our circumstances to bring about divine purpose in our lives, it is then that we have pleased the Father. For God does not exist for us; we exist for Him, and it should be our pleasure to please Him. The author uses the martyrdom of Stephen as just such an example of a suffering saint who looked like he was defeated, but emerged more than a conqueror. As Stephen was being stoned to death, he never complained--he never rebuked nor reviled his attackers. Instead he just kept loving God, which was evidenced by the fact that as he was dying he continued calling on the name of the Lord and prayed for his murderers. In spite of this most brutal and horrific circumstance, which resulted in his death, Stephen emerged the victor because Jesus, who was seated at the right hand of the Father, was so impressed by Stephen's love and dedication that He rose from His seated position and, with a standing ovation, welcomed His conqueror home (Acts 7:55-56).

Section V deals with the allegory of the Song of Solomon--Christ's relationship with His Bride, the Church. In this section Sorge examines the different levels of consecration in the life of the Christian. He starts with chapter 19 pointing out the nuances of our fervency for Christ during the honeymoon stage of our union. Chapters 20-23 stays with the theme of the Song of Solomon examining the progressive stages of intensity in our passion for the Lord as we mature in our relationship with Him. The author makes it clear that along our journey toward spiritual maturity we will, of course, encounter opposition from our enemy, Satan. This opposition comes in the form of pain, suffering and obstacles and is ultimately designed to keep us from passionately pursuing our Saviour. However, Sorge encourages the reader through the Word of God to persevere and keep loving God knowing also that the Lord rewards our diligence.

"The Fire of God's Love" will help you to appreciate the intensity of His love for us and the joy that comes from loving and obeying Him passionately whether you're in the valley or on top of the mountain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pain Has a Purpose, September 14, 2001
By
This review is from: Fire of Gods Love: (Paperback)
All throughout my life I have experienced emotional pain and sometimes physical pain. More recenlty I have been healed in many areas but this book explained the why of suffering better than any other teaching I have ever been exposed to. I want all my friends to read it. I loaned it to my pastor and to a co-minister as they also have been through much suffering and yet are faithful to God. It is good to be in the company of Bob Sorge and people such as these men I know. Somtimes we need to be encouraged by someone who has been there and understands what it's all about and has revelation as to God's purpose in it all. It has confirmed the peace I have been feeling in my spirit.
