5.0 out of 5 stars REALLY EXCELLENT - BUT A WITCHEY FEMALE, October 12, 2006

(REAL NAME)
Jessy Turner was widowed and on the run. She had suffered through a marriage gone bad. She was not going to let another man ruin her life.
B.J. Johnson was a red-headed devil who was determined to bed and bully Jessy and force her to beg him for mercy. Yeah! right.

All the trouble started around a necklace of rubies and diamonds [never get to see it] that Jonathan Turner put up against an I.O.U. in a poker game with a dangerous man with a sun-darkened face and a cigar.

Only someone shot Jonathan and Jessy ended up a widow. Boy was she happy.
She knew that her only excape from B.J. was to disappear. She carefully planned her escape. Yikes! the dark stranger found her. He wanted that necklace.
Oh, the story just keeps getting better. <g>

Cort Lancaster was a powerful rancher who has decided that he wants a son to inherit his holdings. He has a nasty relationship with his step-mother, Marie and is determined to keep her from getting her hands on his fortune. He also has a sister, Sheila to look after. Marie is trying to get her married off and out from under Cort's influence.
We get a good chuckle when Cort's mail-order bride shows up.

<g> Cort takes over Jessy's life, under a few threats, and finally backs her into an agreement of a marriage of convenience to produce a son. Well, Marie will not allow it to happen and gives Jessy some herbs to prevent conception.

Cort does not believe any thing that Jessy tells him, she has lied too many times. Then there some attempts on his life, after B.J. shows up.
We have a slight complication when Cort's friend, Tom, shows up.

Whew! what a crazy mixed-up mess. Thoroughly great read - nasty villians - a lot of distrust + lies - the reader should really enjoy this story.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - for an older book [1990]characters are darn good too.
