Editorial Reviews

Fire In The Hole is iGod’s second solo album. It's darker than the first and he seems to have forgone the house underpinnings in favor lighter beats. The result is that instead of having drone tracks OR dance tracks as on Fuckscapes (2003), the beats flow in and out of the drones as needed. The mostly-analog track "Malice Aforeskin" features the bowed instrumentation of Phil Dole, iGod’s collaborator on In Search Of The Brown Note (2004) and stunning hypnotic percussion and is easily one of the disc's highlights. From iGod's "Geneva" period, just before he worked on Sharkula's Dirty Caviar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Cleansing, and Food For Thought, August 5, 2006
This review is from: Fire In The Hole (Audio CD)
Very, very interesting. On first pass, this is merely a modestly competent ambient/electronic album. It took me several passes (and a little bit of external research) to realise that it's a concept piece, and a very haunting concept piece at that. It is the life of Satam al-Suqami' from childhood to martyrdom -- from the playground to his final descent into the side of the twin towers. There's nothing political going here (as far as I can tell, but I obviously can't read the arabic on the inside of the insert), just a context for some moody, brooding textures with some soft middle eastern touches. A far more realized effort than his earlier F*ckscapes (the concept on that disc is pretty self-evident in the title), and not at all wanky like some of his projects with other people (e.g., In Search Of The Brown Note w/Phil Dole of Chord). Even the excrusiatingly long "Nine Hundred Eleven Seconds" works -- it serves a purpose and it pays off.
