want to hook a young reader?-find Fire Hunter,
By A Customer
This review is from: Fire-Hunter (Hardcover)
I am another reader who remembers "Fire Hunter" like it was the only book that ever counted in my youth. I read it in elementary school and have been looking for it since I had children of my own. What a great book to inspire a child's imagination! I know that I read all of the rest of Kjelgaard's books just because Fire Hunter was my first. I can't find it anywhere, but surely a book like this will be reprinted.

Fire Hunter,
By A Customer
This review is from: Fire-Hunter (Hardcover)
As a youngster, "Fire Hunter" was my first glimpse of prehistory mankind. The author skillfully created characters I could understand and care about, and introduced me to an ancient society that I never knew existed. With care toward authenticity without overwhelming a young reader, the story was memorable enough for me to want to read it again as an adult. The publisher would not lose by reprinting the novel. There is a new generation caught up with dinosaurs ready for an introduction to humanity's beginnings. "Fire Hunter" is easily a young reader's equal to Jean Auel's adult novel "Clan of the Cave Bear."

Fire-Hunter,

Do you remember the Weekly Reader? Then you're probably as old as I am. Each month, we were presented with a list and short synopsis of about fifty books from which to choose. In the sixth grade, I discovered Tom Sawyer and there was no holding me back. My parents were forced to limit me to three books per month. I fondly remember the sweet agony of narrowing that monthly list down to three.Fortunately, one of those books was Fire-Hunter. I lost my copy shortly after I read it but the story stuck with me, lo, these many years. It sparked an interest in early man that I have yet to shake. I eagerly await an opportunity to reaquaint myself with Hawk and Willow.

This review states what the book was like.,

I read this wonderful book when I was in the 6th grade. It clearly states what it is like. It is about a man named Hawk and a girl named Willow who are soon banished from their tribe. They face many dangers, such as wooly mammoths, giant sloths, cave bears, learning to make new tools, and wild hunters. This book was read to me by my teacher and I greatly appreciate it. If you like stories about learning to survive, I suggest you read this book that earns 5 stars on my list.

Excellent story about believing in yourself and your ideas.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Fire-Hunter (Hardcover)
This story of an early man shows that product testing is best not done in a live environment... or on a wooly rhino. Once the hero is banished from his tribe, his ingenuity and perseverence carry him until he finds his former tribe, starving and cold. He becomes the hero in their eyes once he rescues them from starvation, clothes them, and shares his cool, new bow and arrow with them. Typical, but a good lesson in believing in yourself, never quitting, and forgiving those who would not benefit from your vision. A good story for anyone who is facing peer pressure against their budding individuality.

The original Clan of the Cave Bear for older kids.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Fire-Hunter (Hardcover)
I remember this book as being one of my all time favorites as a child. The book sparks the imagination, and though I'm not sure that you will go out and make a spear and spear thrower after reading it as I once did, You will certainly identify with the main charcters. School librarys have found Jim Kjelgaard Books to be favorites for years, it's indeed very unfortunate that this book, one of his best, seems to be no longer available

Youthful Remembrance,
By Jeff Dalton (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fire-Hunter (Hardcover)
I've read thousands of books for fun and on my way to a PhD, and the feeling I got from reading Fire-Hunter is still the standard by which I judge most fiction. I use the memory of this book to keep alive a passion and excitement for reading that I fear alot of older people have forgotten...wrapped in a blanket, oblivious to everything but the pages you can't stop turning. What a shame this book is so hard to find.

Good Memories,

I've been coming back to this site to see if the book has been republished for 2 years now. Fire Hunter spurred my imagination when I was young but my 1963 paperback is falling apart from reading it. From giving me a script to act out as a boy during my adventures in the rolling fields south of Cheyenne, WYO. to peaking my interests in prehistory through college this book was my base. Not even Clan of the Cave Bear can compare. Who can get someone to republish so I can have that long awaited Hardback in my library.

Kjelgaard was an original.,
By James Robert Smith (Matthews, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fire-Hunter (Hardcover)
I've read sf stories and many novels that lifted their plots from this book. Jean Auel and many others learned their fictional licks from FIRE HUNTER, an original concept when Kjelgaard placed it on paper, but now merely fodder for others to rip off.Although a novel for children and young adults, it's well worth a read for adults, too.

back of the toilet for 30 years,
By Dale D. Vermillion (La Crescenta, CA United States) - See all my reviews

Well, not quite thirty years. This book is about discovery, from mans best friend to his most bloodthirsty enemy. This book should have been made into a movie long, long ago. It would bode man& men well to follow these logical principles of deduction and wonder.
